Avalanche Seminars

Winter sports

A free four-part avalanche workshop for backcountry travelers including snowmobilers and skiers will be presented at two locations in Sandpoint, Idaho, in the next few weeks.

The workshops do not constitute a full course, said Shep Snow, a certified avalanche instructor who will conduct the sessions. “But they should offer a chance for outdoor enthusiasts to gain additional knowledge about the avalanche hazard.”

Complete two-day avalanche courses will be offered in the area later in December and January.

The four workshop sessions will cover separate topics, including the anatomy of an avalanche, effects of wather on the snowpack and avalanche stability tests. The fourth session in each workshop will cover route selection and rescue techniques.

All sessions start at 7 p.m. as follows:

At Sandpoint Marine on Nov. 30, Dec. 21, Jan. 4 and Jan. 18.

At Ground Zero on Dec. 1, Dec. 22, Jan. 5 and Jan. 19.
