Obituaries

Lucy (Mattus) Ping LaCrosse, Wash.

Graveside service for Lucy (Mattus) Ping, 92, will be at 11 a.m. today at the LaCrosse Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Ping, who was born in Liverpool, England, died Wednesday.

Her family came to the LaCrosse area in 1911. She married Albert Ping in 1925.

Mrs. Ping was a homemaker and a member of the Catholic church.

Survivors include two sons, Donald Pine of LaCrosse and Victor Ping of Walla Walla; two daughters, Jeannette Ping and Joann Barry, both of LaCrosse; and a brother, Albert Mattus of LaCrosse; two sisters, Ann Peterson of LaCrosse and Magdelena Stone of Portland; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

George Engle Spokane

Visitation for George L. Engle, 51, will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home. Memorial service was Sunday at the South Hill Bible Church. Private graveside service will be at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Engle, who died Wednesday, was born in Ephrata, Wash. His family moved to Spokane when he was an infant.

Mr. Engle graduated from Liberty High School in Spangle in 1966.

In 1971 he married Gayle Skaufel.

Mr. Engle worked as a security consultant at Spokane Safe and Lock Co.

He was a member of the East Spokane Kiwanis Club, Spangle Grange and South Hill Bible Church. He also served as a board member for the Liberty School District.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Kevin Engle of Spokane and Jeffrey Engle of Beaverton, Ore.; two daughters, Katie Engle of Spokane and Sara Suksdorf of Thornton, Wash.; his mother, Viola Engle; three brothers, Don, Karl and Roger Engle; and two sisters, Janet Haney and Laura Engle.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Deacon Fund at the South Hill Bible Church, East Spokane Kiwanis Club, or the Liberty School District, Spangle, WA 99031.

Richard `Doc’ Hatton Cottonwood, Ariz.

Memorial service for Richard “Doc” Hatton, a former Spokane resident, will be at 2 p.m. Dec. 5 at Crossroad Church in Columbia Falls, Mont. Westcott Funeral Home in Cottonwood, Ariz., is in charge of arrangements.

Born in Gosport, Ind., Mr. Hatton died Nov. 19.

He moved to Spokane in 1948 and worked on the maintenance team for the city of Spokane at the Opera House and Convention Center.

He recently moved to Cottonwood.

Mr. Hatton was a member of the Tyler (Wash.) Grange and the National Rifle Association.

Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Sondra; five daughters, Sheri Litchfield of Kalispell, Mont., Vickie and Lisa Moreland, both of Columbia Falls, Mont., Mary Manning of Port Townsend, Wash., and Jane Raban of Flagstaff, Ariz.; six sons, Rich, Harry and Tim Hatton, all of Spokane, Paul Baker of Seattle, Jerry Moreland of Kalispell and Tom Hatton of Canyon Country, Calif.; two sisters, Hazel Boll of Los Lunas, N.M., and Emma Hickman of Norwalk, Calif.; 19 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Wilburn `Bill’ Jones Spokane

Memorial service for Wilburn “Bill” Jones, 82, will be at 2 p.m. today at the Cremation Society of Washington.

A 55-year Spokane resident, Mr. Jones died Thursday. He was born in Farmer, Wash.

He worked as a meat cutter and retired from Sigman’s IGA in 1982, and the Rockwood Market in 1993.

Mr. Jones was a member of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 1439.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Irma; a daughter, Janet Smith of Spokane; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Union Gospel Mission or Anna Ogden Hall.

Sister Bernadette Carlson, SNJM Spokane

Vigil service for Sister Bernadette Carlson, SNJM, 87, will be at 7 p.m. today at the Convent of the Holy Names. Funeral Mass is planned for 10 a.m. Tuesday at the convent. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sister Carlson, who was born in Seattle died Thursday.

She graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Marylhurst College in Oregon. She received a master’s degree and doctorate in English from Loyola University in Chicago.

Sister Carlson pronounced her vows as a Sister of the Holy Names in 1935.

She taught at St. Mary’s Academy in Portland from 1935 to 1941. She later taught at Marylhurst College and in Spokane at Holy Names College. Sister Carlson taught English and chaired the English department at Holy Names College. She served as president there from 1955 to 1970. She remained as a faculty member at the college and then served as poet in residence at Fort Wright College of the Holy Names.

In 1993 she came to the Convent of the Holy Names to assist in the archives. She retired in 1997.

Survivors include a sister, Anastasia Lightfoot, and a brother, Raphael Carlson, both of Seattle.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of the Holy Names Retirement Fund.

Robert Hatlett Savannah, Ga.

Memorial service for Robert G. “Bob” Hatlett, a former longtime Spokane resident, was Nov. 17 at Fox and Weeks Funeral Home in Savannah.

Born in Fairfield, Ill., Mr. Hatlett died Nov. 14. He was 70.

He served in the Air Force for 27 years. He was stationed at Fairchild Air Force Base from 1969 to 1973 and served as a survival instructor.

Mr. Hatlett graduated from Spokane Community College.

He worked as an agent and broker for William J. Carter Real Estate and Victor Lewis Realty. He later opened Bob Hatlett Realty.

He moved to Savannah in 1984.

Survivors include his wife, Betty; two daughters, Elizabeth Budd of Springfield, Mo., and Barbara Fling of Savannah; two sons, William Hatlett of Moultrie, Ga., and David Hatlett of Savannah; two sisters, Naomie Ratcliff of Mount Vernon, Ill., and Flora Harl of Fairfield; a brother, Dick Hatlett of Rock Island, Ill.; and six grandchildren.

Deloss `Andy’ Anderson Spokane

Visitation for Deloss “Andy” Anderson, 92, will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North. Service is planned for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Private burial will be held at Fairmount Memorial Park. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A 88-year Spokane resident, Mr. Anderson died Tuesday. He was born in Cranston, Wis.

He worked as a truck driver for School District 81.

Mr. Anderson was a member of the Tepee Toter Camping Club.

Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Alice; a daughter, Darlene Stewart of Spokane; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane.

Gene `Jerry’ Nesbitt Spokane

Service for Gene “Jerry” Nesbitt, 77, will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Fairmount Memorial Park.

Mr. Nesbitt, who was born in Vananda, Mont., died Wednesday.

He was a resident of Spokane for 75 years.

Mr. Nesbitt served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He later served in the Washington Air National Guard. He retired in 1982.

He was a member of the Air Guard Boosters and the Eagles Lodge.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Evelyn; three sons, William, Gary and Ron Nesbitt, all of Spokane; a brother, Don Nesbitt of Spokane; two grandchildren and four stepgrandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane.

Zella (Fallis) Harder Spokane

Memorial service for Zella (Fallis) Harder, 86, was Nov. 17 at Spokane Valley Church of the Nazarene.

A 55-year Spokane resident, Mrs. Harder died Nov. 14.

She was born in Spirit Lake, Idaho, where she graduated from high school.

Mrs. Harder worked as a beautician, waitress and housekeeper. She also worked in child care.

She spent the winter months in Arizona.

Mrs. Harder played in the Senior Kitchen Grater Band and was a member of Spokane Valley Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include a son, Lyman Nylen of Port Townsend, Wash.; a daughter, Judy Gumenski of Spokane; nine grandchildren and 11 greatgrandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Spokane Valley Church of the Nazarene or Presbyterian Church of Spirit Lake.
