Nc Outlasts Mt. Spokane

The last time the North Central Indians had a winning record in the Greater Spokane League, they won the state volleyball title.

NC improved to 3-2 in the GSL Thursday night with a 7-15, 15-4, 4-15, 15-7, 16-14 marathon win at Mt. Spokane.

Mt. Spokane served for the match at 14-13, but NC got a sideout and 14-all tie. Hannah Meisen-Vehrs served the final two points, the last coming on an Angie Domrese kill.

Domrese and freshman Amy Oates combined for 26 kills. Domrese and Nicole Bostic had 20 digs apiece.

NC finished 9-7 in the GSL in 1995, when it won the State AAA title. The Indians’ last winning record before ‘95 was in 1985.

Also in the GSL Thursday, Joelene Bogle totaled eight kills and six aces as Ferris (5-0) took a 3-0 win at Central Valley. CV trailed the first game 7-1, scored six consecutive points, but lost 15-9… . Andrea Rose, coming back from a badly sprained ankle, had nine kills and seven blocks in Mead’s 3-0 win over visiting Rogers. Mead is 4-1… . Sarah Everstine’s nine kills and Kristi Thorne’s 10 digs guided Gonzaga Prep (3-2) to a 3-0 win at University. G-Prep held on for a 15-13 win in the third game after leading 14-6… . Tonight’s big match is Shadle Park (5-0) at Lewis and Clark (4-1).

Christa Stanford, Shannon McGrane and Lindsey Terry had eight kills apiece to guide Colville (3-2) to a 3-0 sweep at Lake City (3-3) in the Border League… . . Also in the BL, Rochelle Ruen totaled 16 assists, six aces and six digs in Sandpoint’s 2-0 win over visiting Coeur d’Alene. Sandpoint is 5-0, CdA 4-2… . Moscow (5-0) tied Sandpoint for first place with a 3-1 win over visiting Cheney. Traci Sanchez scored the final six points of Moscow’s 15-7 comeback win in the first game, then served six consecutive points during a 15-6 third-game win… . Cindy Holland had 11 kills, and Erin Murphy and Rhiannon Platt combined for 25 digs in Post Falls’ 3-0 win over visiting Clarkston… . Jessie Mattoon and Mary Beth Spencer combined for 27 kills in Lewiston’s 3-1 win over visiting West Valley. WV won the first game 16-14.

Jen Barcus finished with 11 kills and eight blocks, and Lakeside (5-0) continued to set the pace in the Great Northern League with a 3-0 win at Newport… . Also in the GNL, Marissa Greene had 10 digs, and she and Nicole Jones combined for 21 kills in Medical Lake’s 3-0 win over visiting Chewelah. ML, 2-12 last season, is off to a 3-2 start… . Crystal Scharnhorst had 11 kills and Brianna Hill 11 digs in Deer Park’s 15-12, 18-16, 17-15 win at Riverside. DP led the second game 14-6 before the Rams stormed back.

Girls soccer

Jen Svennungsen scored at 79 minutes, when Pullman’s goalkeeper was caught out of the box, and visiting Riverside (4-0) edged the Greyhounds 4-3 to take over first place in the Great Northern League. Pullman (3-1) is 0-7 vs. Riverside the last three years. Riverside’s Larissa Mueller, who scored her 110th career goal in the first half, left the match early in the second half with a suspected torn anterior cruciate ligament… . Also in the GNL, Cheri Montgomery shot over the head of a wall of defenders on a direct kick, and Medical Lake notched a 1-0 win at Chewelah. The direct kick was set up when Chewelah goalkeeper Rhea Ross stepped on the line of the goal box while making a save… . Lakeside (3-1) scored midway through the second half for a 1-0 win at Deer Park.

Kristine Hale and Becca Storm scored twice apiece during Sandpoint’s 7-0 win at Colville in the Border League.

Cross country

Champions Cory Rebmann (16 minutes, 35 seconds for 3 miles) and Crystal Evans (20:19) helped Colville sweep West Valley in boys and girls Frontier League meets at Colville Elks Golf Course.
