Gabel Helps Eagles Dump Weber State
Jennifer Gabel totaled 16 kills with a .389 hitting percentage as Eastern Washington (12-3, 5-1) defeated Weber State 3-1 in Big Sky Conference volleyball Saturday at Reese Court.
Angie Hall added 21 kills and 12 digs for EWU, which hit .346 in the second and fourth games. The fourth game was a 15-3 win.
Stephanie Johnson had 26 kills for the Wildcats (9-6, 3-3).
Casie Lomax had a season-high 20 kills and San Francisco (11-5, 2-0) defeated visiting Gonzaga 3-1 for its first consecutive West Coast Conference wins since October 1995.
Teresa Russell added a career-high 11 blocks for the Dons, who are tied for first place in the WCC. Shannon O’Connor hit .361 and had 18 kills for the Bulldogs (4-10, 0-2).
Lindsey Wagstaff had nine of her 16 kills in the third game, and Whitworth defeated visiting Puget Sound 3-1 for its first win over the Loggers in seven attempts.
Nicole Weedman served seven consecutive points as the Pirates (6-8, 3-3 Northwest Conference) rolled to a 13-1 fourth-game lead. The Loggers (3-9, 1-4) won the first game when the Pirates had nine attack errors.
Utah State (3-8, 2-2) held Idaho to a negative hitting percentage in the fifth game and edged the host Vandals 3-2 in the Big West Conference.
The Vandals (12-4, 3-1) had at least 14 kills in each of the first four games, but finished with three kills and six errors in the telling fifth game.
Men’s soccer
Brian Ching finished with three goals and one assist in Gonzaga’s 8-1 non-conference win over visiting Montana State-Billings (2-8-1).
Brett Fink added a pair of first-half goals, one on a cross-field pass from Ching, to send the Zags to 5-4-1. GU’s Mike Thompson scored a pair of late unassisted goals.
Whitworth and Willamette played to a scoreless tie after two overtimes in a Northwest Conference match at Salem, Ore.
J.J. Klaus of Whitworth (7-2-1, 3-0-1) received a red card in the second OT. Willamette is 5-5-2, 2-1-1.
Donald Owen-Shafer scored three times in Community Colleges of Spokane’s 6-1 win over Everett at Spokane Falls CC.
Randall Pratt of the Sasquatch (10-1-1, 6-0-1 Northwest Athletic Conference of Community Colleges) scored at 3 minutes after dribbling through four defenders.
Women’s soccer
Megan Black scored a pair of late goals, and Gonzaga (3-8) broke from a 2-all tie with a late flurry for a 5-2 non-conference win over visiting Montana State-Billings (5-5).
The Zags trailed 2-1 midway through the second half when they scored goals 42 seconds apart. Jenny Harvey scored the first and assisted on the second.
Natalie Flindt headed in a crossing pass from Jenny Bellone at 50:57 in Willamette’s 1-0 win over Whitworth at Salem, Ore.
The Bearcats (8-0-1, 4-0 NWC) held the Pirates (4-3-2, 4-2-2) to seven shots on goal.
Lauri Faraschuk, who just moved from defense to forward, scored twice as CCS defeated Everett 6-0 at SFCC. Shelly Zahrowski added two second-half goals for CCS (6-3-3, 2-1-1).
Cross country
Club Spokane won the non-Division I men’s team title at the Willamette Invitational in Salem, Ore., topped by second-place Ryan Pauling (24 minutes, 13 seconds for 8,000 meters) and third-place Rob Aubrey (24:19).
Jenni Saling of CCS ran 18:00 for 5,000 to place eighth among women.
Boise State’s men and women were team champions at their invitational at Eagle Island State Park in Eagle, Idaho.
Washington State’s Ian Johnson, who ran 24:28 for 8,000, and BSU’s Abby Peters, 17:44 for 5,000, were individual champs. EWU’s men finished second, led by ninth-place Matt Kerr (24:53).
Women’s tennis
WSU won five singles and two doubles championships at its eighth annual Cougar Classic at Stadium Way Tennis Center.
Junior Erica Perkins defeated Boise State’s Pia-Lena Ander 6-4, 6-4 for the singles title.
