Cda Teachers Nix Second Contract

From Staff Reports

Coeur d’Alene teachers rejected a second contract offer from the school district on Monday.

The district’s 500 teachers have been working without a contract since school began Sept. 1. The teachers have held three rallies to support their negotiating team, marching through downtown Coeur d’Alene to the district offices.

JoAnn Harvey, president of the Coeur d’Alene Education Association, said the main sticking point is salary. She would not elaborate.

The Idaho Education Association reports that the average teacher salary in the Coeur d’Alene School District was $35,541 in the 1998-99 fiscal year. Although the district is the state’s sixth largest, teacher salaries rank 11th statewide, according to the IEA.

Judy Drake, chief negotiator for the district, said she had not heard from the teachers union yet and could not make a comment about the district’s new offer.
