Adams County Othello
Othello postmaster Jim Harrin is puzzled by a rash of mailbox explosions. Recently, mailboxes on West Hatton Road and Radar Hill have been blown up with M-80 firecrackers and CO2 cartridges.
Ferry County Republic
Darius “Doc” Young recently took the Washington State Pistol Championship by shooting 2,652 out of 2,700 aggregate. There were 34 competitors. Earlier, Young won the Alaska State Pistol Champion title.
Grant County Moses Lake
When residents near the Wheeler Corridor hear the tornado siren, they likely won’t be heading for the root cellar. The siren was put in place to warn of industrial accidents at nearby plants. After an October 1998 explosion at Advanced Silicon Materials Inc. released a toxic gas cloud, concerned residents asked that a siren be installed to warn them of any future hazardous material accidents.
Lincoln County Harrington
The Women’s Division of the Harrington Golf Club is hosting its annual fall rummage sale today at 9 a.m. at Memorial Hall. Also on the agenda for today is the Harrington Homemakers Bazaar at the Harrington School. Craft vendors and homemade goodies are on the menu there starting at 10 a.m.
Pend Oreille County Metaline
Selkirk High School’s annual Shakespearean play has been cast. This year, the students will perform “As You Like It.” Teacher Tara Leininger says the comedy is typical Shakespeare. Main characters Rosalind and Orlando are in love, but little goes right for them. Chrissi McDonald will play Rosalind, with Danny Hubert as Orlando.
Spokane County Spokane
The Baddlands Cyclocross series hosts its next race Sunday near the Downriver Municipal Golf Course. Cyclocross is a grueling all-terrain bike race in which competitors must frequently dismount to overcome obstacles on short, closed-loop courses. Hourlong heats start at noon and 1 p.m. Racers can register on site starting at 11 a.m. For more information call 328-1170.
Stevens County Colville
With snow about to fly, the local food bank is looking to restock its shelves and educate the public about its workings. Colville Food and Resource Center will hold an open house Thursday from 1 to 7 p.m. Visitors can tour the facility and talk with food bank board members.
Whitman County Pullman
WSU Regent Peter Goldmark, who is chairing WSU’s presidential search committee, will be available to members of the university community Thursday. Goldmark is holding office hours from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Compton Union Building, Room 222. Faculty, staff and students are invited to stop by anytime during those hours to learn more about the search and provide input about the qualifications of the next president. In addition, classified staff and administrative/professional employees are invited to a brown bag lunch that day in Room 212 from noon to 1:15 p.m.

Benewah County St. Maries
Arson is believed to have caused the Oct. 1 fire on the ridge near Canyon Creek that overlooks the county landfill. The fire was the second in less than two weeks believed to be caused by arson. One engine responded to the fire. The Department of Lands is requesting information from anyone who has witnessed another person lighting slash piles. The department requests witnesses record the license plate number and a description of the vehicle and driver.
Bonner County Sandpoint
The Sandpoint Independent Highway District is offering a new booklet designed to help people fully appreciate the community’s trees. The “Outstanding Trees of Sandpoint” booklet provides a self-guided tour through Sandpoint, featuring 24 types of trees and drawings of the leaves. The publication is available at the highway district, the UI Cooperative Extension Service, Sandpoint City Hall, the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce and the Sandpoint Ranger District.
Boundary County Bonners Ferry
The Better School Committee has received $5,700 of the $12,000 to $15,000 estimated for a project to replace the junior high’s wooden walkway with asphalt and to install a basketball court. None of the money for the project will come from the school district. The group hopes to replace the walkway before the first snow.
Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene
The Women’s Center is seeking men and women to serve on its board of directors. The nonprofit organization provides advocacy, shelter, crisis intervention, individual and group counseling, referral and community outreach and education for victims of domestic violence, rape and sexual assault. Letters of application with name, address, home and work phone numbers, reason for applying, a brief personal history and community references are due by Oct. 25. Latah County Moscow
Community Action Agency is offering free “Pathways to Success” classes to income eligible participants. Formerly known as Life Skills Class, the new classes include new trainers, topics and information. Areas covered include job search, getting hired, positive self image, money and stress management, how to deal with difficult people, dealing with grief and loss, household management, health and nutrition, parenting and time management. The next fourweek series of classes begins on Oct. 18 and continues each Monday and Wednesday through Nov. 10 on the first floor of the Moscow Community Center on the corner of Main and 3rd Street. Shoshone County Kellogg
As the street preparation work proceeds on the Milo Creek Improvement Project, Go Pro Construction will remove the silt fences. The construction zone will remain a restricted area to all non-construction vehicles, as well as pedestrians, unless crossing the street to reach homes. The restriction is needed to promote safety and prevent tracking of contaminated materials.

Lincoln County Libby
The Lincoln County Combined Campaign Telethon on Oct. 5 netted about $9,400, down from $10,129 at last year’s event. Audio problems plagued the fourth annual telethon. A fund-raising potluck and auction for the Combined Campaign, featuring mostly food items, is scheduled Thursday at the Kootenai National Forest Supervisors Office. The Combined Campaign was started in 1976 as a way to combine resources to raise money for local charities.
