Nancy Kaplan feels so strongly about conflict resolution that she doesn’t take a salary for her job as a mediator. Kaplan is the director of Conflict Resolution Unlimited, which recently taught local fourth, fifth and sixth graders mediation techniques. The two-day training will enable the kids to help their peers in school and teach others about respect.

The 10-day Republic Harvest Hoe-down, beginning Friday, is a celebration of the arts featuring talented area artisans. Craft, art and music classes will be held throughout the hoe-down. For more information, call (509) 775-3371.

Moses Lake
Grant County Fire District 5 is taking the City of Moses Lake to court over the impending Wheeler Road industrial corridor annexation. The fire district will ask a judge to stop annexation on the basis of so-called “developer method” annexation and utility extension agreements. The city says it will “vigorously defend itself” against the lawsuit.
Lincoln County
Almira
Kids here will no longer hawk candy, magazines and gift wrap throughout the school year. The Almira School District has decided to allow ASB fund-raising cards. The cards will let patrons donate directly to the ASB fund.
Pend Oreille County
Metaline Falls
The North Pend Oreille Scenic Byway recently was honored as an “exemplary grass roots byway” at the National Scenic Byways Conference. The byway is a way to put this very rural, often forgotten corner of Washington back on the tourist map as a must-see area.
Spokane County
Airway Heights
Airway Heights Community Center, W. 13120 13th, will host the Penny Carnival Oct. 23 from noon to 3 p.m. Booths will feature games and activities that cost pennies to play. Local firefighters will judge a pre-carved pumpkin contest. Contestants can register from noon to 1 p.m. For more information, call 244-4845.

Onion Creek
Terri Charbonneau just wanted a couple of swings outside her Onion Creek General Store. She got an entire hand-crafted playground and basketball hoop. Dennis Egger and Peter Quinn helped get the project finished. Locals of all ages play hoops each night as families and neighbors now have a fun place to gather.
Whitman County
Pullman
The Economic Development Committee of the Pullman Chamber of Commerce will host a discussion of the business climate in Pullman titled “Business Partnerships: Developing, Exploring and Deploying Them to Increase Profit.” It will be from 7 to 8:45 a.m. on Wednesday.
