The largest U.S. air carriers by Monday had joined ranks behind a $20 increase by Continental Airlines for advance-purchase tickets favored by vacationers. Delta, America West Airlines, American Airlines, United and Northwest Airlines have raised fares.

British Airways said it will buy 12 new Airbus Industrie A318 jetliners to replace some of its older Boeing planes on short-haul routes. That was a blow to Boeing Co., which had hoped to win a high-profile customer for its new 717 jetliner.
