Ten years ago: An earthquake in Northern California measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale killed 67 people, injured 2,500 and caused $7 billion in damage.

Five years ago: Leaders of Israel and Jordan initialed a draft peace treaty. Negotiators for the Angolan government and rebels agreed to a peace treaty to end their 19-year civil war.

One year ago: A pipeline explosion and fire in southwest Nigeria killed some 700 people.
