Senior citizens will get a chance to hone their driving skills in the 55 Alive mature driving course.
Sponsored by the American Association for Retired People, the two-day seminar allows senior citizen drivers to earn a discount on their automobile insurance. The Banks Lake Golf and Country Club is a step closer to becoming an 18-hole course. Golf club board members are looking over a proposed agreement with the state to lease 30 acres of land for the expansion. The lease would begin at $1,500 annually and decrease over time. However, 30 acres isn’t enough space for the expansion, so additional land will have to be leased from the local port district.

The Lincoln Hospital Foundation’s Sharing Hearts luncheon raised more than $10,000 for purchasing a fetal heart monitor. Public radio personality and humorist Doug Hurd entertained the 180 people in attendance. During the past 10 years, the foundation has raised more than $350,000 for hospital upgrades and its endowment fund.

The Ted Carlson family will have plenty of fish to eat. The Carlson clan reeled in a halibut weighing more than 220 pounds during a recent fishing trip to Broughton Slough on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. Carlson hooked the monster with 30-pound test line while his wife, Laine, and daughter Melyssa looked on. The fish dragged their 16-foot canoe for 45 minutes until another boat could be flagged and other lines were attached to haul the 6-footer in.

A driving class that may save drivers older than age 55 money on their auto insurance will be held on two Wednesday mornings - Oct. 20 and 27 - in the Cheney City Hall. Each participant who completes the eight-hour, two-day class will receive a certificate to give his or her insurance company that may result in a discount.

Folks at Library of the Lakes are preparing for the annual soup supper benefit. This year’s supper will be Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the old schoolhouse in Loon Lake. The Pullman City Council will hold a public hearing today at 7:30 p.m. on revenue sources for the 2000 city budget. Council members also will discuss changes in the section of the animal-control ordinance that deals with dangerous animals. And the council will consider resolutions to adopt parks and recreation fees, approve the preliminary plat for Staley 8th Addition and authorize Triton Cellular Partners to construct, maintain, repair or remove a wireless communication facility at the Pioneer tank.

“Backyard Forests,” a workshop sponsored by the University of Idaho cooperative extension system, will be Nov. 11 at the Church of the Nazarene in St. Maries. The workshop will help homeowners with five acres or less of forest land apply basic concepts of forest ecology to keep their trees healthy. Participants will learn about tree species native to North Idaho, how forests grow and change over time, common forest insects and diseases, how to improve the health of trees, how to reduce potential insect, disease and fire problems and ways to enhance forest wildlife habitat. Donald J. Stookey was sentenced Friday to eight years in prison for his role in a July 1997 fire at the state probation and parole office in Moscow. Second District Judge John Stegner sentenced Stookey, 21, after he had been convicted of solicitation of arson. Stookey, who must serve a minimum of 20 months before he will be eligible for parole, will begin his prison term next summer after he completes a sentence for a forgery offense.

R&R Construction will be reconstructing Road 206, the railroad grade road, beginning Monday. A culvert will be upgraded and a bridge will be removed. The road will be closed during construction, with closures occurring for up to eight hours at a time. Work should be completed by mid-November.

Teri Rayome and Jo Ann Hogue have applied for the board vacancy for Libby Public Schools. The board has until Nov. 20 to appoint a successor to Roxanne Parker, who resigned recently. Rayome also applied last October to replace Todd Lapka, who resigned, but the board chose Parker.
