WASHINGTON
Adams County Ritzville
An old-fashioned tea and style show was held recently by the Antique Annies at the historic Frank R. Burroughs home. Guests toured the home, enjoyed a vintage fashion show and inspected some antiques. In addition, Ruth Gust portrayed the mansion’s mistress, Julia Burroughs, in a one-act skit.
Ferry County Republic
Ferry County Memorial Hospital board and administrators believe the hospital can operate another five years without having to seek a tax increase. However, voters will be asked Nov. 2 to approve a fiveyear tax levy of 75 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation to replace an expiring levy at the same rate.
Grant County Coulee City
The Coulee City Co-op has joined Northwest Plastics to recycle plastic pesticide containers. This is the first year the program has been open to all farmers. The plastic will be shipped to the Midwest, where it will be made into fencing, curbing, drain tile and plastic pallets.
Lincoln County Harrington
Damian Putney, a four-year veteran of the Whitworth College football team, came home to Harrington recently to talk to youths about following their dreams and working hard. Putney also took time for a little touch football with the youngsters before heading back to football practice in Spokane.
Pend Oreille County Usk
Bob Shanklin is challenging incumbent Leonard Magart for a seat on the Port of Pend Oreille board of directors. Both candidates cite boosting the local economy and job market as priorities.
Spokane County Spokane
The next local Sierra Club outing will be a paddle trip in the Sun Lakes area near Coulee City, Wash. Distances will vary depending on skill level and ambition. Participants should meet Saturday at 8 a.m. in front of Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane and should bring paddles and floatation gear, sunblock, lunch, water and warm clothes. Stevens County Kettle Falls
The Kettle Falls library has received a windfall of books. Each year, the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association donates the display books from its September conference to a rural library with a limited budget. This year, Kettle Falls received the cache of fiction and nonfiction works. The library is open Mondays from 1 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Whitman County Colfax
State Department of Ecology officials will begin measuring particulates in the air in Whitman County beginning in January. Pullman and Colfax will have monitors measuring air pollution for 24 hours every six days. In Colfax, the monitor will be on the roof of the Public Service Building. Department of Ecology employees will collect the air samples and analyze them.
IDAHO
Benewah County St. Maries
Benewah County commissioners’ efforts to expand the courthouse are meeting obstacles. The plan commissioners agreed on includes purchasing the Masonic Lodge, but several Masons have opposed selling the building. Plans are on hold until commissioners can meet with the Masons. The commissioners also have reviewed a proposal to build and operate a jail with the Coeur d’Alene Indian Tribe.
Bonner County Sandpoint
A group of Sandpoint citizens is renewing a plan to form a charter school. The proposed school would be for students in the seventh through ninth grades, and classes would have no more than 15 students per teacher. Parents and guardians would be required to volunteer at least 40 hours of service to the school. The group plans to bring the official proposal to the Lake Pend Oreille School District board of trustees next year.
Boundary County Bonners Ferry
The Bonners Ferry Seniors Hospitality Center operates from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. The center serves meals Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays at noon, and home-delivered meals are available. The center also provides transportation for senior citizens to recreational activities and operates subsidized housing for elderly and handicapped people. Kootenai County Post Falls
The Post Falls Urban Renewal Agency meeting scheduled for next Thursday has been canceled. The agency’s next meeting will be Nov. 4 at 7 a.m. at City Hall. That’s a week earlier than usual because the regularly scheduled meeting would fall on Veterans Day.
Latah County Moscow
University of Idaho geologists are proving they are proficient with the pen as well as the rock hammer. Dennis Geist, UI associate professor of geology, was named this month to the editorial board of the Journal of Petrology, published by Oxford University Press. Geist is one of only two North Americans on the board. Petrology is the study of the origin, chemical composition and classification of rocks. Geist and John Oldow, another UI geology professor, formerly served on the editorial board of Geology, the flagship journal of the Geology Society of America. And Scott Wood, UI professor of geochemistry, recently was named chief editor of the all-electronic journal Geochemical Transactions.
Shoshone County Kellogg
The Kellogg School Board recently approved hiring a teaching assistant for kindergarten classes at Sunnyside Elementary School. There are 27 students in the morning kindergarten class and 26 in the afternoon class. The board also authorized a teaching assistant for the first- and second-grade classes at Canyon Elementary School. Enrollment in both classes exceeds the previous accreditation standards.
MONTANA
Lincoln County Troy
Enrollment in the Troy School District is down four students from last October. There are 255 pupils in the elementary school and 322 students in the junior high and high schools. The October enrollment figures are used along with the count in February to determine funding from the state. The district receives $3,529 for each elementary student and $4,812 for each junior high and high school student.
