Athol Elementary Lacking Classroom Space Money Raised From Supplemental Levy Election Would Be Used To Add More Room At Three Schools

Classroom space is at a premium in the Lakeland School District, and one of the schools that is feeling the pinch is Athol Elementary.

With that in mind, the school district plans to hold a supplemental levy election on Jan. 25 to raise money to build more classroom space.

Although the district has not determined the exact amount of the levy, school officials estimate it would be about $1.5 million.

The money raised would be used to add class space at Athol, Garwood Elementary and Timberlake Junior/Senior High School.

Athol Elementary is known for more than just crowded classrooms.

The Navy selected Athol Elementary to take part in its acoustic research program in Bayview. Athol’s students were asked to name the Navy’s second large-scale model submarine.

The students voted the attack submarine to be named The Cutthroat. The $50 million test submarine is scheduled for delivery to the research center in Bayview in 2001.

The Navy has been working with the school since the beginning of the project. Students took part in a presentation ceremony in June 1997. Naval officials presented the school with a huge canvas banner displaying a cutthroat trout jumping over the submarine. The banner hangs in the school’s gymnasium.

The school’s students and faculty have received souvenirs such as T-shirts and pencil sets, as well as computers.

Two fourth-graders and the former principal last year went to the East Coast on a trip sponsored by the Navy.
