School Elections Uncontested Two Positions - On Great Northern, Liberty Boards - Lack Candidates

Carlos Acevedo Staff Writer

School board positions in South Spokane and West Plains districts are not contested this election.

Ten candidates are applying this year, with two positions not filed for on the Great Northern and Liberty boards.

Here is a brief description of the candidates and their reasons for running:

Great Northern

Consisting of one school, the Great Northern School District has been called the modern equivalent of the one-room schoolhouse.

Ken Pegg, 44, is running for Position 2 on the Great Northern School Board.

A security manager at Kaiser Aluminum, Pegg also handles internal relations and community affairs.

He has served on the board for eight years already and hopes to continue.

“I have a very strong commitment to children,” he said.

Amy Shulund, 42, is running for Position 3. Shulund is self-employed, running Big Sky Industrial, a contractor business, with her husband.

She’s been on the board for seven years and is running again, she said, because she wants to make a difference.

“Everything that you do makes a difference in a district this small,” she said.

There were no filings for Position 1.

Medical Lake

This district runs six schools.

Julie Albright, 40, is running for Position 3. She is a junior at Eastern Washington University studying social work. She has already served on the board for four years.

She’s running again, she said, because, “I believe in public education, and kids should be able to get a good one.”

She currently has four children in Medical Lake schools.

Terry Nabakowski, 41, is running for Position 4. He has been an attendant counselor at Lakeland Village in Medical Lake for 24 years.

He said he is running because he wants to be involved in local school issues.

“It’s every citizen’s civic duty to do public service,” he said.

Rod Vonlehe is running for Position 2 on the board. He was not available for comment.

Cheney

The Cheney School District oversees seven schools.

Kathy Bumgarner, 37, is running for Position 3. She is a 12-year veteran of the board. An instructional facilitator for Spokane School District, Bumgarner has been in education for 24 years.

“Education is the one thing I know how to do,” she said. She is running, she said, because “I feel that I’m making a difference.”

Richard Mount and Kerry O’Conner are also running for uncontested spots on the board. Neither was available for comment.

Liberty

Liberty School District serves the area around and including Spangle and has two schools.

Christi Scrimshaw, 42, is running for Position 3. She works for Principal Financial Group processing 401(k)s and other financial plans.

She is running to continue her involvement with the board. She was appointed in February to take over for Marie Tellesfen.

Mark Bullock, 43, is running for Position 5. He works for Dupree Building Specialties, selling specialized construction products.

Bullock was appointed to the board a year ago. He said he wants to stay on the board because, with four kids in Liberty schools, he has a keen interest in how the schools are managed.

No one filed for Position 1.
