Adams County Othello
There are many ways to build tourism, and Les Clemons says supporting the Othello-Coulee Heritage Tourism Route is a good way to build a reputation. Roadies traveling the 100 miles of SR17-SR26 from Othello to Coulee Dam have a plethora of sightseeing opportunities. Not only are there historic sites and Grand Coulee Dam, but cultural, artistic and natural wonders. Clemons says both cities and chambers of commerce should be touting this day trip.
Ferry County Wauconda
The Wauconda Harvest Family Night will be held at the Wauconda Hall at 6 p.m. Saturday. All who can play an instrument or sing are invited to a jam session during the old-fashioned potluck.
Grant County Moses Lake
Frontier Junior High was the scene of fatal shootings in 1996. Now the school will be featured in a school safety documentary because of steps taken since the tragedy. “Anyone’s Child, Everyone’s Responsibility” is being produced by the South Carolina Department of Education. A film crew spent several days in Moses Lake, and the documentary should be released next April.
Lincoln County Davenport
The fall free dump day for city residents is Nov. 6. All yard waste and garden clippings are accepted at the city dump just north of town from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. For those who miss that date, the dump will also be open for garden waste Nov. 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Again, only natural waste is accepted.
Pend Oreille County Newport
Pend Oreille County and Seattle City Light have agreed on impact payments and lost revenue for the operation of Boundary Dam. In a 10-year agreement, SCL will pay $35,000 annually to Fire District No. 2 for fire protection and $70,000 yearly to make up for “shorted” payments to the county over the past 10 years.
Spokane County Spokane
Bette Largent, owner of Carousel Consultants in north Spokane, has been elected to a second two-year term on the board of the National Carousel Association. Largent has restored and maintained Spokane’s 1909 Looff Carousel in Riverfront Park since 1992. That carousel was recently rated No. 3 of the top 10 antique carousels in the United States and Canada in an article in USA Today.
Stevens County Kettle Falls
The Castelwood Players of Cratloe, County Clare, Ireland, will present a comic tragedy, “Big Maggie” at the Woodland’s Theater on Saturday. The play was written by Irish playwright John B. Keane. The Castelwood Players are critically acclaimed in their homeland. “Big Maggie” begins at 8 p.m. and tickets can be purchased at the door.
Whitman County Pullman
Neill Public Library and the Whitman County Library District are hosting the third “Inquiring Mind” program series entitled “Ezra Meeker: Remember the Oregon Trail.”
The one-hour program for middle school through adult ages chronicles Meeker’s 20-year effort to preserve what was left of the Oregon Trail and have Congress build an adjacent national highway. Meeker is portrayed by Raymond Egan of Steilacoom, Wash., who is affiliated with the Washington State Historical Society. Egan is a frequent performer at the Oregon Trails Interpretive Center in Baker City, Ore. The program begins Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the library in Colfax and again at 6:30 p.m. at Pullman’s Gladish Community Center, Room B20.
IDAHO
Benewah County St. Maries
The University of Idaho Logger Education to Advance Professionalism program will be in St. Maries Nov. 3-5 at the Federal Building. The program features presentations, discussion, videos and other activities to improve participants’ understanding of forest ecology, silviculture and water quality. Boundary County Bonners Ferry
Ducks Unlimited will sponsor the annual banquet and auction Nov. 12 at the Boundary County Fairgrounds. Games and raffles begin at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 7. Proceeds support waterfowl habitat restoration. For tickets, contact Larry Napier at (208) 267-3139.
Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene
The Museum of North Idaho has received a $17,500 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Service in Washington, D.C. The museum is one of 186 organizations to obtain portions of the $15 million awarded. They will use the money over two years to hire a part-time person to implement programs in outreach including traveling and community exhibits and school programs.
Latah County Moscow
The construction of a pool in Moscow is nearing completion. Last week, the Moscow City Council approved the addition of a 30-by-22 foot storage building that will cost $20,000 to $25,000 to the HamiltonLowe Aquatics Center. The money for the building will come from $230,000 in contingency funds. Approximately $25,000 of the contingency funds have been spent, leaving money for items deleted before contracts were finished. June 1 is the tentative date for the pool to open.
Shoshone County Kellogg
The chambers in Kellogg and Wallace have formed the Greater Silver Valley Connection.
The new organization will explore joint marketing and other ways the chambers can combine efforts.
“We’re getting smaller and smaller all the time,” said Sharon Waldo, director of the 170-member Greater Kellogg Chamber of Commerce. So it only makes sense for the two to cooperate, she said.
The two chambers discussed combining operations this summer. Though Kellogg chamber members supported the idea, the Wallace chamber board voted against it.
MONTANA
Lincoln County Libby
The Libby Public Radio group has decided to bring in the signal from KUFM in Missoula to provide local access to National Public Radio. The group also was considering KPBX in Spokane. Representatives from both stations had made presentations at past meetings. The group is now raising money to help purchase the satellite receiving equipment.
