Machine Magic

Fred Phelps adjusts the ramps on his “Flip and Slide,” a mechanical contraption that transports ball bearings up pulleys, down ramps and around looped tracks. Phelps, of Tracy, Calif., designs machinery with no intent except to amaze. The 84-year-old mechanic builds his machines for area fairs and festivals.
