After Rob Phillips tendered his resignation as principal of Hiawatha Elementary, John Bartkowski, the assistant principal of McFarland Elementary, was moved into the position.

This is opening day of the county fair, which is themed, “Denim and Lace at a Country Place.” Horse judging begins today. There will be horse racing on Saturday. The women’s wild cow race will be Sunday.

Crescent Bar

Residents of Crescent Bar are concerned about the future of their homes. Homeowners lease the land their houses sit on from the Grant County Public Utility District. That lease expires when the PUD’s license to operate Priest Rapids and Wanapum dams is up in 2005.

Wilbur

A water fountain honoring fallen soldier Kenneth M. Kessinger was moved from the old football field to the museum grounds. Kessinger, a 1964 Wilbur High graduate and standout athlete, was killed in Vietnam. Since school sporting events are now at Emerson Park, people felt the fountain needed a more prominent location.

Newport

Rob McKaig has left his part-time marshal’s jobs in Cusick and Ione to become a full-time police officer in Newport.

Nine Mile Falls

Bonnelle R. Baerman, daughter of Dean R. and Elvira R. Baerman of Nine Mile Falls, recently enlisted in the Army and will leave for basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C., on Sept. 15.

Colville

The smiling face leading Saturday’s annual Northeast Washington Fair Parade will be a familiar one. Otto W. Hytien, 88, earned the honor after living in the area, and being involved with the community, for 79 years. Hytien, a former miner, has farmed, played baseball and held a host of odd jobs in the area.

Whitman County

Pullman

Washington State University football fans don’t need to worry about searching for a parking spot near the stadium. The WSU Visitor Center will sponsor free football shuttles during each Cougar home football game.

The shuttle will provide transportation from the Cougar Depot, at Grand Avenue and Davis Way in Pullman, to the central WSU campus starting two hours before kickoff.

Tensed

Tensed residents recently discussed a proposed trail between Tensed and DeSmet with the Idaho Transportation Department board of directors. A trail is being proposed between the two towns to provide a safe place for walking and biking.

Bonner County

Sandpoint

The Sandpoint Ranger District is accepting comments on two easement requests, one by JD Lumber and the other by the Idaho Department of Lands.

The Bonners Ferry Seniors Hospitality Center operates from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. The center serves meals Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at noon. A preschool screening for Post Falls children up to four years old will be Sept. 9 and 10, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Post Falls Preschool/ Head Start Center. Children will be screened for progress in communication, coordination, social development, self-help skills, hearing and vision.

The U.S. Air Force has approved the University of Idaho International Studies program, which is coordinated and administered by the Martin Institute for Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution, for accreditation for their nontechnical scholarship winners. As a result, high school seniors who receive U.S. Air Force scholarships can now meet the terms of the scholarship by attending the UI and earning a degree in International Studies. Rand Lewis, Martin Institute associate director, said the International Studies program offers the necessary diversity in its curriculum, especially foreign languages, global issues and regional studies, to prepare for a career in the Air Force.

The South Fork Coeur d’Alene Sewer District is advising citizens to refrain from contact uses of the South Fork of the Coeur d’Alene River. The request is due to a sewer lift station bypass that occurred Sunday. A mechanical failure caused a pump to quit working and sewage to leak onto the ground in the Pine Creek area. The sewage did not flow into the creek, but did flow onto a dike area. For information, contact the sewer district at (208) 753-8041.

Lincoln County Commissioners have authorized spending up to $25,000 to construct a new building to house bathroom facilities, a lunch room and office space at the Eureka landfill.

The employees at the Eureka landfill have been without proper facilities for five years.
