Two Arrested In Goodwill Theft

A man and a woman were arrested early Sunday on suspicion of stealing donated items from a Goodwill Industries store in the Spokane Valley.

Brent L. Carlile, 40, and Lorene M. Schuler, 39, both of Spokane, were booked into the Spokane County Jail shortly after 2 a.m. on charges of first-degree robbery, according to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Department.

Deputies were called to the store at 105 N. Balfour about 1:25 a.m. Sunday by a security guard.

While responding to the scene, Deputy Mike Kittilstved spotted a van leaving the area northbound on Herald Road from Main Avenue. He stopped the van and detained the suspects until other deputies could talk to the security guard. The security guard told deputies he spotted a van backing into the area where newly donated items are temporarily stored. A man and a woman then began loading items into the vehicle.

The security guard blocked the van with his own vehicle, then tried to restrain the pair as they tried to leave the scene.

The woman began hitting and kicking the security officer, then the man began punching him as well, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

The two were able to get into the van and flee.

While making the arrests, deputies found a lamp and a toy car in the van that the security officer said were taken from the donation site.
