How they scored First quarter Utah 3, WSU 0

Golden Whetman 48 field goal: 12 plays, 29 yards, 6:01. The Utes took advantage of a Nian Taylor fumble for the first score of the game. The Cougars pushed the Utes into a third-and-6 situation, but Darnell Arceneaux was able to complete a pass in front of cornerback Mory Banks for the first down.

Second quarter Utah 6, WSU 0

Whetman 45 field goal: 10 plays, 43 yards, 1:56. Once again, Utah took advantage of a Taylor fumble to get on the board. This time, Taylor seemed to flip the ball up after his knee was on the ground. But the officials ruled it a fumble. The Utes converted a third-and-12 pass in front of Mory Banks to keep the drive alive.

Third quarter Utah 13, WSU 0

Chris Christensen 35 pass from Darnell Arceneaux (Whetman kick): 7 plays, 65 yards, 2:42. Utah converted on third-and-11 and third-and-9 to keep the drive alive. Arceneaux then pump-faked, cornerback LeJuan Gibbons bit, and Christensen was wide-open for the first touchdown of the game.

Utah 20, WSU 0

Mike Anderson 9 run (Whetman kick): 4 plays, 21 yards, 1:36. The Utes were able to take advantage of two WSU mistakes for their second touchdown. The first was a Jeremy Thielbahr fumble on the Cougars’ 21. Then, after WSU’s defense stopped the Utes and forced a field-goal attempt, Lamont Thompson was whistled for running into the kicker. The Utes received a first down inside the 10 and from there, Anderson scored easily.

Fourth quarter Utah 27, WSU 0

Anderson 40 run (Whetman kick): 4 plays, 72 yards, 1:33. The tired Cougars defense failed to wrap up Anderson, allowing him to burst right through the middle of the field for the long scoring run.

Utah 27, WSU 7

Deon Burnett 1 run (Rian Lindell kick): 16 plays, 80 yards, 5:00. Backup quarterback Jason Gesser orchestrated the Cougars’ longest drive of the afternoon with a series of passes and scrambles that led them down the field. The Cougars were able to convert on four third-down plays during the drive and got inside the 10 when Burnett went from 12 around the right side.

Curtis Holden The 6-2, 230-pound junior linebacker finished with 11 tackles - two for losses - and one sack.
