The local fire department’s ladder truck responded to the Lion’s Park handball courts to rescue a frightened cat from atop a concrete wall. Chief Duane Van Beek says his office responded because the cat had been stuck for two days.

County commissioners are asking employees to submit cost-cutting suggestions for the 2000 budget in case Initiative 695 passes this fall, drastically lowering the state motor vehicle tax.

Assault cases in the county are rising sharply. In 1997, there were 20 aggravated assaults reported to authorities. In 1998, the number was 47. The Sheriff’s Office says a majority of assaults are domestic disputes.

Odessa Deutsches Fest, a popular German celebration, is often characterized by its beer garden. Complaints of drunken driving have the Washington State Patrol planning to give the late September event extra attention.

An Affair on Mainstreet, a town celebration. is today. More than 50 craft and food vendors will be featured, along with kids activities, entertainment and train rides.

Four Riverside High School graduates received Eastern Washington University scholarships for the 1999-2000 school year. Connie Kerbs received a $2,000 Phi Theta Kappa honor society scholarship, Amanda Lyons received a $2,500 academic honors and a $635 Killin scholarship, Genevieve Larson received a $1,000 returning student scholarship and Matthew Moskwik received a $2,000 Avista transfer scholarship.

The annual MusicFest fund-raiser at the Northeast Washington Fairgrounds helped raise money for Moonglow - a group that performs good deeds for the community. The local food bank is a favorite charity of Moonglow.

Washington State University appointed public projects developer Jerry Schlatter as director of facilities development. Schlatter, a registered architect, worked for the Spokane Public Facilities District and was project manager for the Spokane Arena. Schlatter will play a lead role in campus planning and facility construction of more than $300 million in WSU construction projects.

St. Maries
Local school districts received money to reduce the size of elementary school classrooms. St. Maries School District received $28,213, Plummer/Worley received $19,401, Kootenai received $9,101 and the ACC district received $2,680. The money is the districts’ share of Idaho’s $5.6 million federal grant targeted at reducing classroom size in grades one through three.

The Bonner County 4-H Leaders Council will meet Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. at the Bonner County Extension Office. The agenda includes nominations of 1999 officers. The Bonner County 4-H Horse Leaders will meet Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. at the Priest River Community Congregational Church. The last horse show of the season will be discussed. The Idaho Commission on Aging will hold its quarterly commissioners meeting Sept. 16 and 17 in Coeur d’Alene. Commissioners will meet Thursday at the Department of Labor conference room and at Todd Lecture Hall on the North Idaho College campus Friday. Agenda items include the Older American Act reauthorization, reorganization of the ICOA and the Idaho Medicare Education Partnership grant. A special evening session for public discussion will be Thursday at 7 p.m.

Three Pinehurst city government positions will be up for election Nov. 2. Terms of Mayor Jim Hodge and council members Betty Dudley and Gay Hoffman end in December. Petitions for nomination are available at Pinehurst City Hall, and must be filed by 5 p.m. Sept. 23.

Computerized mapping of Lincoln County is nearly complete. The county planning department is converting to a computer system that shows land ownership, roads, elevations, surface water and floodplains. The system includes overlays for political subdivisions including school, fire and conservancy districts and voting precincts.
