The Superior Court Clerk’s office has a new part-time employee that the county Assessor’s Office would like to use one day per week for mapping work. County commissioners have consented on the condition that no additional money be spent from the assessor’s budget.

A recent check by the county Environmental Health Department found high levels of fecal coliform in Banks Lake. Environmental Health Director Kevin Barry says the amount found in recent samples could make a person swallowing the water sick. The most likely source of the fecal coliform is ducks and birds. Signs at Steamboat Rock State Park warn swimmers of the danger.

Local fire chief Wayne Badgley is hanging up his hardhat. Badgley spent 20 of his 35 years on the volunteer force as chief. Under Badgley, the Fire Department grew and updated most of its equipment. Badgley’s last day will be Sept. 30.

The county auditor’s recent state audit found the department lacking in staff. The latest audit found the auditor so short-staffed that financial records have been filed late from 1995 through 1998. Financial reports also are late, and the office lacks an integrated grant accounting system. The county has software to track federal grant money, but staff isn’t fully trained to use it, the state audit found.

Habitat for Humanity-Spokane is conducting a series of three informational meetings for people interested in becoming Habitat homeowners. The meetings will be Thursday at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. and Friday at 7 p.m. at the West Central Community Center, 1603 N. Belt. Potential homeowners must work on housing projects in conjunction with volunteers and Habitat staffers.

The geology of North Idaho will be the topic of two classes Saturday and Sunday at the University of Idaho’s Clark Fork field campus. A complete rewriting of the draft environmental impact statement for the proposed Rock Creek mine isn’t likely, Kootenai National Forest supervisor Bob Castaneda said. But Castaneda plans to meet with the Montana Department of Environmental Quality to discuss the request from the Rock Creek Alliance. The group has asked for a new draft environmental impact statement to address issues in an integrated and comprehensive manner. The proposed mine would be located on the southeastern edge of the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness northwest of Noxon, Mont.
