Don Cox, Republican

Cox was born in Longview, Texas, and his family arrived in Seattle when he was 2. His father worked at the shipyards, his mother at Boeing. He moved to Spokane in the eighth grade and later attended Whitworth College, where he studied political science and met his wife, Sherry.

Cox, 59, worked as a school counselor, teacher and administrator at various Washington school districts before landing the superintendent’s job in Colfax in 1990.

He’s currently an associate professor at Washington State University, where he also oversees the Rural Education Center, a WSU service for school districts.

Cox holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Whitworth College, and a master’s degree and Ph.D. in education-related fields from Washington State University.

As of Sept. 3, Cox had raised $70,515 for his campaign.
