Golden Bears Dump Eastern
Alicia Perry pounded down 18 kills and California hit .295 as a team Wednesday night in turning backing Eastern Washington 15-13, 15-5, 15-9 in a non-conference women’s volleyball matchup in Berkeley, Calif.
The win evened the Golden Bears’ record at 2-2, while EWU, which hit only .101, fell to 3-2.
Jennifer Gabel paced the Eagles with eight kills.
Adrianne Edmond registered 12 kills, four aces and 14 digs in leading Community Colleges of Spokane to a 15-10, 15-8, 15-8 win over visiting Blue Mountain Community College in the NWAACC opener for both teams.
Prep volleyball
Shayla Bush had 19 digs for Ferris as the Saxons (2-0) picked up an 11-15, 16-14, 15-8 non-conference win over Mead.
Men’s basketball
John “J” Locklier, a 6-foot-10 transfer from Miami of Ohio, and Mike Malloy, a 6-3 freshman walk-on from San Diego, have joined the Washington State basketball team. Locklier, a junior, appeared in 18 games last year, but averaged less than one point and one rebound per game. He will sit out the 1999-2000 season under the NCAA’s transfer rule, but has two years of eligibility remaining.
Malloy, according to WSU coach Paul Graham, turned down scholarship offers from San Diego State, Loyola Marymount and Northern Arizona to walk on at WSU. As a senior at University of San Diego High School last season, he averaged 20.9 points.
Men’s soccer
Jake Gillen scored three goals and assisted on another as visiting Community Colleges of Spokane (4-1, 1-0 NWAACC) blanked Walla Walla Community College 6-0.
Women’s soccer
Christine Rehwald and Kara Hines each scored first-half goals and goalkeeper Jessica Froelich made them stand up as visiting Community Colleges of Spokane (2-3 overall, 1-0 NWAACC) posted a 2-0 win over Walla Walla Community College (0-1, 0-1).
College golf
The University of Idaho has hired ex-Gonzaga University coach Brad Rickel to coach its men’s and women’s golf teams.
Prep girls soccer
Jessica Bowen, Cyndi Hulett and Kristin Carlson each scored in a shootout as East Valley edged Shadle Park 3-2 in the non-league season opener for both Greater Spokane League schools.
Bowen and Christine Bartlett scored for EV in regulation, while Rachel Jones booted both of SP’s regulation goals.
In other non-league action involving GSL teams, North Central (1-0) blanked Rogers 2-0 on goals by Jammie Bertholf and Lindsey Hagen, and Sarah Bot scored two goals in leading Lewis and Clark (1-0) to a 3-0 win over Gonzaga Prep (0-2).
In addition, Laurel Jones scored on a penalty kick late in the first half to lead Mt. Spokane to a 1-0 win over Ferris in the season opener for both teams, and University (1-1) outlasted Central Valley (0-1) 5-3.
