House Mining Hearing Saturday

Rep. George Nethercutt will join members of a House subcommittee Saturday in Spokane to discuss possible changes to federal mining law.

The hearing of the energy and resources subcommittee of the House Resources Committee will give members of Congress a chance to hear about the importance of mining to communities around the country.

The hearing will be conducted by Rep. Jim Gibbons, R-Nev., and will feature witnesses from the mining industry and representatives from communities that rely on mining, a Nethercutt spokesman said.

It was not immediately clear if the hearing, which was announced Thursday afternoon, will include witnesses from the environmental community.

Among the topics will be several proposals to charge royalties on minerals taken from federal land.

The meeting begins at 9 a.m. at the Spokane Intercollegiate Research and Technology Institute Building, 668 N. Riverpoint Blvd.
