Utah, Gu Highlight Cougs’ Slate
Washington State University has announced its 1999-2000 men’s basketball schedule and will play 17 home games, including a regional television appearance against a recent national finalist.
The Cougars’ marquee home game, one of their four games already picked up by Fox Sports Net, is against Utah. The Utes lost to Kentucky in the 1997 national championship game.
In addition to Utah (Dec. 11) and the annual nine Pac-10 Conference home games, the Cougars have set home dates with Idaho, Grambling State, Gonzaga, Southern University and Portland. Two of those games - Gonzaga (Nov. 29) and Southern California (Jan. 6) - will be played at the Spokane Arena.
WSU conference games to be shown by FSN are home games with Oregon Jan. 22 and Washington Feb. 5 and the Cougars’ game at UCLA on March 9.
At 41 straight, Washington State boasts the third-longest nonconference homecourt winning streak in Division I.
Women’s golf
The Washington State women’s golf team opened the fall season with a fourth-place showing at the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic hosted by Colorado State University at Ptarmigan Country Club in Fort Collins, Colo.
Jennifer Dodd (72-72-77) led the way for the Cougars with a fourth-place total of 221.
Senior Jenny Ballou also finished in the top 10, placing in a tie for seventh place with a three-round total of 226.
The top three teams were Nevada (907), Northern Arizona (914) and Denver (918).
Men’s golf
Three Washington State golfers finished in the top 30 individually to lead the Cougars to an eighth-place team finish at the Rocky Mountain Men’s Intercollegiate hosted by the University of Wyoming at the Jacoby Golf Club in Laramie, Wyo.
Sophomore Jon Reehorn (72-67-74 - 213) carded a career-best, three-under-par 67 in the second round. His 12th-place finish paced the Cougars. Seniors Eric Toomey (75-71-71) and Jeff Gustafson (69-76-72) tied for 29th with scores of 217.
The top three teams were Wyoming (837), Western Kentucky (839) and Campbell (844).
Football
The Whitworth College football opener will not be broadcast on KSBN radio Saturday due to construction at Menlo College. Menlo’s home stadium, Connor Field, underwent renovation during the summer and the pressbox is not ready for phone lines.
All other Pirates games, including next Saturday’s home opener vs. Simon Fraser, will be carried on KSBN 1230 AM.
Volleyball
Community Colleges of Spokane middle hitter Angel Fairbanks, a sophomore from Rogers, was named NWAACC offensive player of the week.
Boxing
Mahlon Kerwick of Spokane defeated Becerril Guillermo 16-11 in his first-round boxing match at the Olympic Cup games in San Diego.
