Adams County Lind
Construction of the $20 million egg farm here has been cracking all summer. Phase one of the project, a “chicks” building, is awaiting electrical work, while other buildings are nearly finished. The facility, owned by National Foods Company of Seattle, will house two million chickens and 400,000 chicks and produce millions of eggs annually. It should also add up to 70 jobs and nearly $300,000 in taxes to the local economy.
Ferry County Republic
The Republic Ranger District has given notice of prescribed burning. The district will burn acreage on Quartz Mountain, Brown Mountain, Rattlesnake Gulch, Swan Butte, Thirteen Mile Mountain, Cougar Mountain and the Karamip area through October. These targeted burns will prepare sites for reforestation and reduce fire hazards through ridding the forest of built-up dried needles, branches and brush.
Grant County Ephrata
The first hurdle was jumped with ease, now the Grant County PUD has to bide its time until midnight Dec. 31, 1999. The recent Y2K readiness drill run by the PUD was a complete success with all systems up and running through the dreaded 9/9/99 date. Sept. 9, 1999 was feared by computer programmers due to the old programmer method of ending a program with a series of nines.
Lincoln County Creston
Creston’s most famous son was honored recently by the state’s rodeo elite. Deb Copenhaver, two-time World Champion Saddle Bronc Rider, has been inducted into the Ellensburg Rodeo Hall of Fame. Copenhaver took the title in 1955 and 1956. Copenhaver, retired, now owns a horse ranch in Creston and holds yearly rodeo camps and tent revivals.
Pend Oreille County Newport
The Washington State Patrol will take over the investigation of Pend Oreille Sheriff’s Deputy John Fritzinger, charged with sexual misconduct. Sheriff Jerry Weeks handed over the case, citing strained departmental resources. Fritzinger was fired for insubordination Sept. 7, after a pre-disciplinary hearing with Weeks. Weeks says the termination is “in no way an indication of his guilt or innocence.”
Stevens County Colville
Locals with big hearts are asked to get a good night’s rest tonight for tomorrow’s fall blood drive. The Inland Northwest Blood Center will be at the Colville United Methodist Church on Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Colville is well known for high participation in blood drives, says local blood drive chairperson Dorothy Walley. She hopes locals will set a new turnout record during tomorrow’s drive. Spokane County Spokane
Lewis and Clark High School will auction vintage fixtures and hardware from the historic school’s interior Saturday.
Bookshelves, telephones, woodshop tools and woodwork will be on the block.
The auction will be held in LC’s auditorium, 521 W. Fourth, from 10 a.m to 1 p.m. People will be allowed to preview the items from 8 to 10 a.m.

Benewah County St. Maries
The Benewah County Fair Board has decided to make the Paul Bunyan Days rodeo an annual event with the success of the recent event. The rodeo produced a small profit for the group; an estimated 1,100 people attended the two shows. Next year’s rodeo will be scheduled for Labor Day weekend to coincide with Paul Bunyan Days.
Bonner County Sandpoint
The Panhandle Basin Advisory Group will hold its third meeting at 6 p.m. on Sept. 28 at the Edgewater Resort in Sandpoint. The group was established to be advisory to the Division of Environmental Quality on issues of water quality protection. The meeting will inform the public and gather comments on the Pend Oreille Bull Trout Plan. Copies of the plan are available at the DEQ, 2110 Ironwood Parkway, in Coeur d’Alene. The Hayden Library will offer a variety of story-hour programs this fall. The latest issue of Fugue, the University of Idaho’s literary magazine, is available for $6. It includes more than 20 poems and four short stories. Lincoln County Libby
The Lincoln County Indigent Services program and the Lincoln County Family Planning Clinic recently received $46,000 in grants form the Idaho-based Steele-Reese Foundation. The indigent services program received $20,000 for emergency medical assistance. The $26,000 clinic grant will hire a nurse practitioner for another day a week and equip a second examination room.
