Gonzaga led in the fourth and fifth games Tuesday night at Martin Centre, but couldn’t close out Montana, losing 15-9, 15-17, 13-15, 15-10, 15-10 in a non-conference volleyball match.

After taking a 2-1 lead in games, Gonzaga let a 10-7 lead slip away in the fourth game. The Zags were ahead 9-7 in the rally-scoring fifth, but were outscored 8-1 down the stretch.

Junior middle blocker Heather Osberg led the Bulldogs (2-6) with 29 kills while Sarah Parsons led the Grizzlies with 22 kills.

Golf

Lisette Carter shot a 74 and leads after the first round of the Spokane Area Women’s Golf Association championship.

Phyllis Worden carded a 70 at Spokane Country Club to record the low net score of the field.

The three-day tournament continues at Deer Park Golf Club today and concludes Thursday at The Creek at Qualchan.

The Washington State women’s golf team captured its second straight top-five finish by placing fifth at the Brigham Young Invitational at the Hobble Creek Golf Course in Springville, Utah.

Junior Jennifer Dodd (233) led the Cougars with her 13th-place finish. UTEP won the team title.

Sophomore Jon Reehorn and junior Jeremy Taylor posted a pair of 72s in final-round action, leading Washington State to a seventh-place finish in the Fairway Club Invitational at Firethorn Golf Club in Lincoln, Neb.

Reehorn (220) moved up to eighth on the final day while Taylor finished at 222.

Kansas won the team title.

Soccer

CCS (3-0-0) blistered visiting Wenatchee Valley with 22 shots en route to an 11-2 rout as the Sasquatch men padded their lead in the Northeast Division of the NWACC.

Sau’l Mendoza scored three times and Erik Johnson twice for the Sasquatch. Mendoza’s second goal came on a free kick close to the penalty area as did one by Donald Owen-Schafer. Both have been practicing curve shots for those situations and their work paid off.

CCS and Wenatchee Valley finished in a scoreless tie in their women’s match but that was a victory of sorts for the Sasquatch as the two teams (1-0-1) remained atop the Northeast Division of the NWAACC with four points each.

Wenatchee defeated CCS 5-1 and 3-1 last season.

Jessica Froelich made six saves for CCS, including two on 1-on-1 attempts.

Boating

Public boating access to Liberty Lake will end for the season today as the Washington Fish and Wildlife Department locks the gates on its boat ramp and parking area.

The early closure is needed to allow workers to begin reconstruction of the site.
