Chiefs Return To Full Strength

With the return of five veterans from pro training camps this week, and assured of having their two import players back by today, the Spokane Chiefs are at full strength heading into the final weekend of the preseason.

The Western Hockey League club plays Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the annual Tri-City Americans preseason tournament.

Lynn Loyns (Detroit), Ryan Thorpe (Vancouver), Brandin Cote (New York Rangers), Kyle Rossiter (Florida) and Jared Smyth (Edmonton) are back after stints with NHL organizations. Slovakian center Roman Tverdon (Washington), the Chiefs’ top pick in the July import player draft, was also due in today.

Daniel Bohac, who led the Chiefs in goals last season, was expected last night after completing high school academic requirements in the Czech Republic.

Spokane opens the Tri-City tournament at 2 p.m. Friday with Portland. The Chiefs take on Tri-City Saturday at 7 and meet WHL West Division preseason favorite Seattle at 11 a.m. Sunday. All games are at Tri-City Coliseum.

Golf

Lisette Carter’s two-round total of 149 leads the field entering the final day of the Spokane Area Women’s Golf Association championship.

Carter, who opened with a 74 on Tuesday at Spokane Country Club, followed with a 75 on Wednesday at Deer Park Golf Club. Susan Rouse is low net of the field with a 134.

The final round begins today at 9 a.m. at The Creek at Qualchan. The championship flight tees off at 11.

Mark Gardner of The Creek at Qualchan shot a 1-over-par 73 for a three-round total of 212 and a tie for 17th place in the Northwest Open at Eagle Crest in Redmond, Ore. He earned $1,180.

Brent Murray of Oswego Lake defeated Jeff Coston of Semiahmoo on the second sudden-death hole for the title. David Christenson (213, $940) and Gary Lindeblad (215, $404.13) of Indian Canyon also finished in the money.

Volleyball

Big Bend Community College (2-0) defeated CC Spokane 8-15, 15-6, 15-13, 15-13 in a Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges match at Moses Lake. Adrianne Edmonds and Krista Nelson combined for 27 kills and six blocks for CCS (1-1).
