Lakeside Should Muscle Up

GNL volleyball

With Colville High School exiting the Great Northern League this year, the door is open for Lakeside to step in as a contender.

The seven-team league will look to Lakeside, Newport and Pullman for the top spots. Deer Park promises to contend.

Lakeside

Second-year coach Kara Price was Great Northern League coach of the year in 1998 after her first Eagles team tied for third place.

Price and the Eagles also cashed in after the regular season, advancing to the State 2A tournament and defeating GNL co-champion Newport in the match for third place.

Lakeside should muscle up again, led by third-year starters Megan Broughton and Bridget Ryan, both senior outside hitters.

Other returning starters are Jen Barcus, sophomore, middle blocker; Kate Reome, junior, setter; and Jackie Nuechterlein, junior, defensive specialist.

Deer Park

Coach Jack Wood replaced Seth McMullen, whose tenure was three years. Wood taught in Alaska bush country the previous two years.

The Stags return third-year starter Brianna Hill, a senior outside hitter/middle blocker who mixes a 5-4 stature with great jumping ability.

Also back are senior setter Kacey Kinder, a third-year player, and junior middle hitter Crystal Scharnhorst, Wood’s choice as the team’s most versatile player.

DP tied for fifth in the GNL last year with a 5-9 record.

“Most opponents will underestimate us early on, but I predict we’ll establish ourselves as contenders before the season is complete,” Wood said.

Riverside

Tami Bruner enters her second year as coach, looking for her first GNL victory. The ‘98 Rams were 0-14.

Rams returning starters are sophomore middle hitter Kelicia Shorts, junior setter Jaime Darby and junior setter/outside hitter Shannon Bruner, the coach’s daughter.

The Rams aren’t short of Shorts. Besides Kelicia, the roster includes senior Heather and junior Kourtney.
