Eastern Sweeps Another
Eastern Washington extended its volleyball winning streak to 18 games Saturday by sweeping port- land State 3-0 in a Big Sky Conference match at Portland.
Middle blocker Jennifer Gabel had a match-high 10 kills and hit .563 for the Eagles (9-2, 2-0), who have recorded six consecutive sweeps.
EWU tore to a 10-1 lead in the second game and scored the final nine points of the third game.
EWU middle blocker Whitney Lewis added nine kills and three blocks. The Eagles wrapped up the match in 1 hour, 11 minutes.
Freshman Holly Harris totaled 15 kills, 20 digs and six blocks in Washington State’s 3-1 win over visiting California in the Pacific-10 Conference.
Joy Sperry added 19 kills and a .264 hitting percentage for the Cougars (6-3, 1-1). WSU sophomore Kristen Johnson had a career-high 10 blocks and nine kills.
Brook Coulter of Cal (4-3, 1-1) had 15 kills and 17 digs.
Tournament most valuable player Shannon Stemler totaled 14 kills and 10 digs, and Nevada defeated Gonzaga 3-0 in the title match of the Zags’ 8th annual Spikeoff Spokane.
Wolf Pack all-tournament picks Kallie LaBossiere and Suzanne Stonebarger added 12 kills apiece.
GU’s Heather Osberg and Britten Kimbell made the all-tourney team. Osberg had 15 kills in the final, and Kimbell added 14 digs and 11 kills.
The Zags defeated Ohio 3-1 to advance to the title match.
Kodi Taylor had 16 kills and hit .324, helping Montana (9-1) defeat Idaho 7-15, 15-5, 15-6, 17-15 at the Montana Invitational in Missoula.
Regan Butler had 39 kills and hit .326 on the day for the Vandals (8-3).
All-tournament choices Allison Holsten, Shae McCormack and Corissa Taylor led Columbia Basin over Community Colleges of Spokane in the championship match of the Inland Northwest Communications Invitational at Spokane Falls CC.
The Hawks of Pasco held off CCS 21-15, 16-21, 18-21, 21-11, 22-20 in the rally-scoring title match.
Adrianne Edmonds and Kortney Stewart made the all-tournament team for CCS. Edmonds had 16 digs and four blocks in the final, and Stewart added 13 digs and five aces.
Willamette (6-1, 2-1) scored the final six points of the third game and seven straight in the fourth game to turn back host Whitworth 3-1 in the Northwest Conference.
Renee Purdy of the Bearcats had four of her 15 kills during a 13-1 start in the second game. Lindsey Wagstaff and Nicole Weedman of the Pirates (4-5, 1-1) each served five consecutive points for a 10-0 first-game lead.
Men’s soccer
Sau’l Mendoza had two goals and one assist, and goalkeeper Tyler Stitt registered his third consecutive shutout as CCS defeated Bellevue 6-0 at Spokane Falls CC.
Erik Johnson scored the first Sasquatch goal, finishing off a Mendoza direct free kick that hit the post.
Jason Kuska scored his team-leading fifth goal and Gonzaga defeated San Diego State 2-0 Friday night at the Coors Soccer Classic in Las Vegas.
Women’s soccer
Utah (4-2) scored 15 seconds after a Washington State score then held on for a 3-1 victory over the Cougars (3-2) in Diadora Cup action at Missoula.
Natalie Kehl’s goal at 72 minutes cut the Utes’ lead to 2-1, but Utah took the ensuing kickoff straight down the field for a goal.
Cross country
WSU’s men won the Division I race at the Big Cross Invitational in Pasco, despite a mixup on the 8-kilometer course that affected two Cougars runners.
WSU’s Oscar Franco-Parra and John Welsh led the pack at 2 miles when they were misdirected on the course. The mistake benefited Chris Charles, who ran unattached and won in 26 minutes, 37 seconds. WSU still won by 42 points.
Ex-Cheney High runner Ryan Pauling won the men’s non-Division I race, in 26:24. Wendy Brunearu, running unattached, finished in 19:25 to edge Jenni Saling of CCS for the non-Division I women’s title.
Amber Johnson ran 19:02.8 for 3 miles to win the EWU Invitational at Finch Arboretum.
Brandon Hauver, running unattached, ran 25:11 for 4.5 miles to top EWU’s Chris Henderson (25:20) in the men’s race.
