Panhandle Fire Danger High

From Staff Reports

The fire danger is high in the northern Panhandle, according to the Department of Lands.

The agency is requesting that everyone working outdoors near grass, brush or in wooded areas use extreme caution. All campfires must be cold to the touch before they are abandoned, and all spark arresters on equipment must be in good working order.

The Pend Oreille District reports that it fought several fires in the past week, including one caused by woodcutters. To date, the district has had 102 fires, burning 153 acres. Of those fires, 52 were human-caused.
