Fish And Game Commission Increases Permits For Antlered Moose

Six new Idaho moose hunts have been created for 1999, as the state Fish and Game Commission increased permits for antlered moose by 139 to a total of 888.

The six new hunts include a total of 26 permits while 120 permits were added in 32 other hunts.

Antlerless moose permits were increased by 25 to a total of 123. Three new hunts were created with 13 permits and 12 permits were added in other hunts.

The Commission also renamed “Muzzleloader, Archery and Shotgun Only” hunts to “Shortrange Weapons” hunts. Both antlerless and short-range weapons hunts are usually held where moose populations are causing depredation on private lands and in areas where long-range weapon use is not appropriate.

Wildlife biologist John Beecham told the commission that Rocky Mountain bighorn lambs are showing better survival rates and said he expects permit levels should increase in the next five years.
