Young Hunters Will Get A Head Start
Young wingshooters will have the field to themselves this weekend for waterfowling during special youth-only seasons in the Inland Northwest.
Washington youths also will get the first shot at pheasants.
A special day devoted to youth waterfowl hunting has been set for Saturday in Idaho, Montana and Washington.
On that day, licensed youth hunters will be get a crack at ducks and geese. Adults will be allowed to assist, but cannot shoot.
Check state regulation pamphlets for details.
In Eastern Washington, Saturday and Sunday also are open to youth pheasant hunting. The Wasington Fish and Wildlife Department plans to release rooster pheasants at about 30 sites before the youth hunt.
“We’ll be releasing quite a few more birds before the youth hunt than we did last year, particularly at the Grant County sites,” said Jim Tabor, bird-release program coordinator for the Fish and Wildlife Department.
In the northeast, about 400 - up from 300 last year - pheasants will be distributed to three sites before the weekend: Fishtrap Lake west of Spokane, Olsen-Dodd area near Creston, and Sherman Creek near Kettle Falls.
For information on release sites, contact the department’s region 1 office in Spokane at 8702 N. Division.
For information on a youth-mentor program that strives to link young hunters from non-hunting families with responsible adult hunters, contact Dave Ware, Fish and Wildlife Department wildlife program manager in Olympia, (360) 902-2691.
