Conservation League Points To More Projects

Idaho Conservation League research on the roadless areas of Idaho national forests shows:

There are 69 timber sales actively being planned, involving construction of 33 miles of road to harvest 400 million board feet of timber on 70,000 acres of forest. The Forest Service has put off plans to build 176 miles of road to harvest another 154 million board feet on 78,000 acres.

The Boise National Forest’s active projects involve plans to build 10 miles of road to harvest 133 million board feet of timber on 38,000 acres.

On hold are plans for another 6.5 miles of road to get at 6 million board feet of timber on 2,000 acres.

The Caribou National Forest’s active projects call for building 8.7 miles of road for the harvest of 20 million board feet of timber on 3,640 acres. On hold are plans for 7.5 miles of road to get at 6.9 million board feet of timber on 1,436 acres.

The Clearwater National Forest’s active projects call for building six miles of road for the harvest of 99 million board feet of timber on 11,000 acres. On hold are plans for 16 miles of road to get at 45 million board feet of timber on 5,000 acres.

The Nez Perce National Forest’s active projects call for building seven miles of road for the harvest of 13 million board feet of timber on 1,500 acres. On hold are plans for 133 miles of road to get at 58 million board feet of timber on 5,330 acres.

The Panhandle National Forests’ active projects call for no road construction to harvest 2.5 million board feet of timber.

The Payette National Forest’s active projects call for building 0.2 miles of road for the harvest of 116 million board feet of timber on 4,715 acres. On hold are plans for 12 miles of road to get at 30 million board feet of timber on 1,800 acres.

The Salmon-Challis National Forest’s active projects call for building one mile of road for the harvest of 5 million board feet of timber on 2,500 acres. On hold are plans for logging 7.9 million board feet of timber on 63,000 acres with no additional road construction.

The Sawtooth National Forest’s active projects call for no road construction to harvest 2 million board feet of timber on 4,300 acres.

The Targhee National Forest’s active projects call for logging 9.4 million board feet of timber on 3,860 acres. No information was available on road-building plans.
