Chimney Fire Spreads, Damages Duplex
Coeur d’Alene fire officials are reminding people to take care of their chimneys and wood-burning stoves after a fire damaged a Coeur d’Alene duplex early Monday.
Firefighters received a call at 1:55 a.m. from a woman living at 1317 E. Walnut.
The woman said she had started a fire in her fireplace Sunday evening and noticed an unusual amount of smoke. Later, she awoke to the sounds of a crackling fire and smoke in the kitchen, said Coeur d’Alene Fire Chief Rick Lasky.
The woman and her three children called for help. No one was injured, but the duplex sustained extensive smoke and fire damage.
Fire officials believe the fire started around the fireplace and spread up the wooden wall into the attic.
Nineteen firefighters responded from the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department, Hayden Lake and Kootenai County fire districts.
