The annual Mennonite Country Auction will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Menno Mennonite Church west of Ritzville. Auction items will include quilts, household goods and antiques. Homemade sausage will be sold, and two local German sausage recipes will be available, along with a host of other German food such as kraut runza and green bean soup. Various demonstrations such as wheat weaving, as well as several crafts booths and a variety of food sales, also are planned. The auction and sale raise thousands of dollars for world missions every year.

Local attorney Alex Wirt recently hit a hole in one at a golf tournament in Chewelah, Wash. The 187-yard shot netted Wirt a new car.

Clarence L. Proctor, 47, of Lexington, Ore., was arrested after he allegedly rear-ended a horse-drawn carriage on Road O-NE, authorities said. Buckboard driver Jessie Avery, 58, of Moses Lake, suffered a broken leg and possible neck injuries.

Local Fire Chief Wayne Badgley says the fall burning ban will remain in place until there’s rain - and plenty of it. Badgley says there has been no rain in the Davenport area since Aug. 31. Despite dry conditions and warm temperatures over the past few weeks, few fires have been reported. “It’s been way down since last year. I guess people are just taking better care of things since they know it’s dry,” says Badgley.

The Newport Police Department will move into its permanent headquarters in the fire station’s old meeting hall today. The hall was remodeled during the summer to house the officers.

The Kettle Falls post office, along with many other rural post offices nationwide, is required to provide free mailboxes to customers residing within a quarter-mile radius of the post office. The U.S. Postal Service requirement applies to all post offices that offer rural delivery but have no city carrier service.

A public meeting on flooding and flood prevention in Pullman is scheduled today from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the senior lounge on the first floor of City Hall. The city of Pullman has arranged for representatives from the Washington state Department of Ecology, the state Department of Fish and Wildlife and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to attend. Department of Ecology representatives also will make a presentation to the City Council at 7:30 p.m. Issues to be discussed include flood control, storm-water runoff and a proposed study of Paradise Creek.

The St. Maries City Council recently approved a matching grant of up to $500 for architectural drawings for a proposed civic center. The action is a first step in determining whether the idea is feasible. The Community Coalition is proposing to build a center that could house an indoor swimming pool and track.

Three University of Idaho fraternities have earned national and regional honors for their contributions to the university and the Moscow community. Beta Theta Pi won several honors, including the Francis H. Sisson award for exemplary community service projects, such as visiting retirement homes, coaching youth sports and picking up litter. Beta Theta Pi also was picked from 140 chapters to receive the most-improved chapter award. Delta Chi was one of five chapters of the 106 nationwide to win an Award of Excellence. Alpha Tau Omega earned two honorable-mention awards based on the chapter’s community service, grades, campus involvement and membership. There are 150 ATO chapters nationwide.

Asarco Inc. has filed a lawsuit claiming Phelps Dodge is violating antitrust laws. The lawsuit seeks injunctive relief and damages for the copper company’s alleged wrongful interference with the planned merger of Asarco and Cyprus Amax Minerals Co. Asarco and Cyprus announced the proposed merger in July.
