FROM SPORTS REPLAY (Thursday, September 30, 1999): Lakeside of Nine Mile defeated Pullman in a Great Northern league volleyball match Tuesday. The headline misidentified Lakeside in Wednesday’s Washington edition. Also, Pullman High School’s Mary Rose was misidentified in the photo caption.

That little ol’ basketball school Lakeside has discovered another girls sport.

Lakeside outlasted visiting Pullman 5-15, 15-11, 19-17, 9-15, 15-8 Tuesday night to take over first place in the Great Northern League.

Lakeside (4-0) has placed at four state basketball tournaments since 1995, but is just getting the hang of volleyball under second-year coach Kara Price.

The Eagles tied Pullman for third place in last year’s GNL race, then turned up the heat to place third at the State 2A tournament. Four full-time and two part-time starters are back from that team.

“We’re really fortunate out here,” Price said. “The kids are committed, they’re hard workers, and they know what it takes to win.”

Pullman (5-1) led the second game 11-9 and appeared ready to take a 2-0 edge in games. But Jackie Nuechterlein served out the game for Lakeside, starting with an ace.

“Things just started clicking on the floor,” Price said. “We’ve been working on being scrappy. We were scrappy last year and have been waiting for that feeling this year.”

The third game tilted the scales. Pullman rallied from a 10-2 deficit to take a 13-11 lead. Courtnie Lees, who served four consecutive points during the comeback, appeared to have a game-winning kill at 14-13, but the point was disallowed for reaching over the net.

Pullman also served for the game at 17-16, but back-to-back kills by Jen Barcus sent Lakeside to the win.

“There were a couple of plays where a whistle here or a whistle there would have made a key difference,” said Pullman coach Drew Wendle.

Emily Sodorff came off the bench to serve five consecutive points in the fourth game, for a 6-2 Pullman lead. Lakeside pulled even at 9, but Kari Dickson served out the game for the Greyhounds.

The Eagles jumped to a 9-2 lead in the final game and didn’t let Pullman back in.

“They played phenomenal defense,” Wendle said of Lakeside. “That was fun to watch, although not too fun because I had to watch them come back on our team.”

Lakeside and Pullman play again Oct. 21 in Pullman.

Also in the GNL, Marissa Greene’s 13 kills and 11 digs guided Medical Lake to a 3-1 win at Deer Park. The Cardinals won the fourth game 15-13 by scoring the final six points.
