EV Baseball Starts Off With Bang

East Valley’s Greater Spokane League baseball debut was gratifying in a couple ways.

The Knights won their first two games and got a “road trip” out of the way.

Coach Kurt Krauth, long an advocate for GSL play, remembers without fondness those annual marathon trips to places like Clarkston.

“I knew I’d like this,” he deadpanned. “That was long travel Thursday, a half-hour trip to Lewis and Clark.”

The trip home was equally pleasant following a 13-1 victory that made the Knights 2-0.

EV had opened the season with a 6-3 win over Central Valley.

Chad Mathison and Chris Moore combined to pitch and bat the Knights to victory.

“As soon as both came in (as pitchers), they had two-run singles,” said Krauth.

Mathison, who pitched into the fifth before tiring, had his in the first inning. Moore’s came in the fifth after he had taken over on the mound in the top of the inning.

Thursday Dave Marlow hit a three-run homer and Mathison also homered. Winning pitcher Adam Stultz and Shae Lanphere each had two hits while Patrick Valenzuela had three.

CV rebounded to administer its annual spanking to rival University, 10-0 in five-innings.

A seven-run third inning did the trick. Included were Kevin Reed’s two-run home run and four successive hits by the B-boys.

It was Reed’s second homer in as many games. Andrew Bower, Kyle Boast, Bo Baeschlin, a double, and Kevin Brown, followed with hits, the latter three driving in runs. Bower finished with three hits. Boast and Reed had two each.

The day before Derek Wohlers hit a tape-measure home run at EV.

“It was probably the longest ever hit at the school,” said Krauth. “It cleared three fences and landed on the track. It was hit a ton.”

University’s one-inning woes began the day before. The 0-2 team gave up four runs in the top of the seventh inning after rallying for a 3-2 lead and lost 6-3 to Ferris.

Titan girls return favor

University’s girls did to Central Valley’s softball team what the Bears did to the Titans in baseball.

A 9-run fifth inning broke open a tight game and produced a 10-0 victory.

U-Hi was rebounding from its shocking 4-3 loss to Ferris that dropped the defending champions into second place in the GSL.

The Titans are a game behind Lewis and Clark, whom they play April 11. CV is one of four teams with three wins and three teams with two losses.

Wrong Jewell

It was Central Valley sophomore Rachel Jewell, not her older sister who helped the Bear shot putters to last Saturday’s Ram Relay victory.

Rachel was part of three top-six placing efforts during the meet, joined by sister Raeanna for fourth in the thrower relay and fifth in the javelin.
