Ten years ago: Secretary of State James Baker met in Washington with his Soviet counterpart, Eduard Shevardnadze, for talks on the Lithuanian crisis.

Five years ago: Francisco Martin Duran, who had raked the White House with semiautomatic rifle fire in October 1994, was convicted in Washington of trying to assassinate President Clinton (Duran later was given a 40-year term).

One year ago: NATO warplanes and missiles attacked an army headquarters, oil refineries and other targets in and around Belgrade.
