Huskies’ Win Over Cougars A Done Deal

Sophomore third baseman Michael Done went 3 for 5 with a home run and drove in three runs Tuesday afternoon to lead the University of Washington baseball team to a 16-6 non-conference victory over Washington State at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.

Washington improved to 11-15, while the Cougars fell to 14-18.

Huskies starter Matt Massingale battled through gusty wind conditions to pick up the win on the mound and even his record at 3-3. The junior right-hander allowed WSU only three runs in six innings.

WSU starter Tyson Thompson continues to battle control problems as he fell to 1-5 on the year. Thompson gave up six runs and four hits in 2-2/3 innings. The Cougars pitching staff combined to walk nine batters, hit three and throw three wild pitches, and the Cougars defense committed four errors.

After a scoreless second, the Huskies tagged Thompson for five runs in the third. UW had only two hits in the inning, taking advantage of four walks, two wild pitches and two hit batters. Right fielder Todd Linden contributed a two-run double down the right-field line.

WSU scored for the first time in the bottom of the third inning when sophomore left fielder Evan Hecker homered over the wall in right field for his second career home run.

Pinch hitter Robbie Cannon singled up the middle to score two runs in the sixth inning and lead the Community Colleges of Spokane to a 3-1 win in the opening game of a doubleheader at Wenatchee Valley College. It was the only appearance of the day for Cannon, a Wenatchee High graduate. The Sasquatch won the nightcap 8-5 on Brett Haial’s three-run triple with two outs in the fourth. Spokane had taken advantage of two walks and a hit batter in the inning.

Rebecca Triplett threw her first college no-hitter and the first for the Community Colleges of Spokane this season in a 13-0 win in the second game of a doubleheader against Blue Mountain Community College in Pendleton, Ore.

The Sasquatch (8-0, 10-4) won the opener 14-5 behind home runs from Sanoi Sao and Kris Rozett. Sao was 2 for 3 with a two-run homer and four RBIs. Rozett was 2 for 4 with a homer and two RBIs.

Sao and Rozett both also homered in the second game, along with Tanya Birchler.

In the nightcap, Triplett struck out four and walked one, and Nicki Meyer hit a three-run double in the team’s 10-run fourth.
