Long-Time Kamiakin Athletic Director Retiring

Randy Dolven, who has been at Kamiakin High School since it opened in 1970 as a teacher, basketball coach and athletic director, made his retirement official Wednesday night, the Tri-City Herald reported.

He’ll leave at the end of this school year.

Also, boys basketball coach Don Schumacher is resigning that post and will become athletic director beginning this summer.

Dolven was the boys basketball coach during the 1970s at Kamiakin leading the Braves to state in 1974 at a time when Richland and Pasco dominated the Tri-Cities area.

Dolven added the athletic director position in 1976. Following the 1979 season he gave up the basketball position to concentrate on the A.D. position full-time.

Over the last few years, he has been a member of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association’s executive board.

Area girls contribute

Courtney Ferguson of Mead scored nine points, grabbed two rebounds and made two assists Friday for the Washington all-stars in their 69-59 loss to the Oregon all-stars in the Northwest Shootout at the University of Portland.

Pullman’s Christa Brossman had six points and six rebounds.

Ferguson is headed to Saint Mary’s College to play, and Brossman will continue her career at the University of Hawaii.

Mead senior chooses Cal

Mead’s Andy Zelinski will continue his football career at the University of California as a recruited non-scholarship player, he said Wednesday.

The Panthers starting quarterback last season said he has the chance to earn a scholarship.

He plans to study computer science and said he chose Cal over UC Davis and UC San Diego.

Pasco gets 2003 meet

Pasco’s Edgar Brown Stadium will be the site of the 2003 Star Track meet - the State 4A and 3A track and field championships - after a vote of the WIAA executive board last week.

A scheduling conflict on Memorial Day weekend prevented Pasco from holding the meet next year.

In 2003, Memorial Day falls on May 26, allowing the WIAA to move the state track meet to the following weekend (May 30-31) while keeping the traditional Friday-Saturday dates before Memorial Day (May 23-24) for all other state championships that year.

West Valley-Yakima hired long-time assistant football coach and head wrestling coach Bob Altshuler to replace retiring football coach Joe Ortolf.

Blaine’s Luke Ridnour, the AP boys player of the year, was named the Gatorade Circle of Champions Player of the Year for the state of Washington, while Redmond’s Emily Ashbaugh was the girls player of the year.
