WSU Pledges To Alter Rowdy Campus Climate

From Staff Reports

Washington State University is taking steps to avoid public disturbances and other alcohol-related problems near campus. Efforts will include increased emphasis on alternative activities and improved communication between students, law enforcement and university officials.

“WSU is committed to altering the climate to ensure a safe and orderly campus and community atmosphere through this spring semester and beyond,” said WSU Provost Rom Markin, who pledged to put substantial resources into the initiatives.

Student affairs faculty members have expanded an existing walking patrol of College Hill every weekend. The faculty presence helps communication and prevents problems through education and early intervention.

Student leaders, who were instrumental in diffusing a recent street disturbance, also are collaborating with WSU officials in the effort. Residence hall and Greek affairs staff are meeting with housing groups to reinforce existing procedures and develop late-night alternatives.
