CV District To Uses Novanet

From Valley Voice, April 15, 2000, page V12: Correction Meetings for a proposed Central Valley School District home schooling family partnership program will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. on April 27 and May 2 at Keystone Elementary School. An incorrect date was published in Thursday’s Valley Voice.

Two new programs are in the works at Central Valley School District. One focuses on distance learning, the other on home-schooling families.

Next fall, the district will start using NovaNet, a major on-line education provider. NovaNet’s curriculum stretches from fifth grade to college.

With NovaNet, Central Valley will target students who miss school for any length of time, as well as dropouts, GED candidates and those who need to make up credits.

The on-line curriculum includes pre- and post-testing, so that students’ progress can be closely tracked.

It’s not cheap. Central Valley will pay $40,000 for its first year on NovaNet. The program is already in use in Spokane Public Schools.

It will be based at the Barker Community Learning Center.

A second program, one that officials hope to open in September, will be a home-school family partnership.

Officials say there are 250 home-schooling families living in the school district. This program, which would be based at Keystone Elementary School, is intended to help families that want help in areas such as testing or materials or with classes such as science and computers.

“Let’s say you home school your children, but you just don’t want to teach physics,” organizer Tere Von Marbod says. “This would be for you.”

The East Valley and West Valley school districts already offer similar programs.

Meetings for interested home-schooling families in Central Valley will be held 6:30-8 p.m. on March 27 and May 2, at Keystone Elementary, 612 S. McDonald Road.
