North Side Teams Ready To Square Off
Girls golf
The six North Side schools playing Greater Spokane League girls golf may again feel squeezed out.
Just three North Side players were in the group of 11 that qualified for the State 4A tournament last season. One graduated, leaving Lydia Keezer of Rogers and Lindsay Dill of Gonzaga Prep as the state veterans among six schools.
Defending state team champion Ferris is the major factor. The Saxons return their entire lineup from 1999, including five who advanced to state.
In the Great Northern League, Deer Park and Lakeside are both 0-1 heading into today’s league home meets.
Mead
Of the nine underclassmen on last year’s roster, only sophomore Jaime McGrath has returned.
Coach Jim Preston’s roster of eight includes six freshmen.
“We are a young team with (one) returner from a team that was seventh at district and eighth in overall standings,” Preston said.
Mt. Spokane
Third-year players Katherine Janney, Jaque Meng and Becky Blashill lead the Wildcats. All three juniors have been with the program since its inception.
“We have come a long way since the first year of the Mt. Spokane girls golf program,” said coach Eleen Northcutt. “Last year we were (seventh) in the GSL, and this year we are looking to improve that standing.”
Mt. Spokane’s other returners are sophomores Bre Kennedy and Lekiesha Grant.
“With the ability of the returning players and the potential of the new girls, this year’s standings should definitely improve,” Northcutt said.
North Central
The Indians’ top veteran is senior Krystal VanGuilder.
“She has made big improvements over the last two years and is starting this season scoring as well as she ever has,” said NC coach Dave Hall.
Also back is junior Lisa Giammona, who had a slow start last spring while recovering from a car accident.
Hall, the school’s basketball coach, coaxed hoopsters Cortney Cressey and Miranda Bullock into taking a stab at golf.
Rogers
Junior Keezer will attempt to qualify for her third consecutive state tournament. Keezer and Chana Bonnett, who graduated last spring, were the first two girls in school history to play at state.
Coach Dave Hughes’ team is otherwise young. Junior Tiffany Mckeown is the other returner.
Rogers had the league’s fourth-best average last season.
Shadle Park
Senior Laura Stembridge is the Highlanders’ most consistent returner, but juniors Tracy Hawkins and Tracy Sacco weren’t far behind. Junior Tasha Haraldson began last season as No. 3 but didn’t play in the league’s first three matches.
“We will have a good, steady girls team this year, without any superstars,” said SP coach Randy Lothspeich. “All our girls will be very close to shooting in the 90s. … They all started golf at Shadle shooting scores in the 120s and have shown great improvement.”
Shadle had the league’s fifth-best average last season.
Gonzaga Prep
Junior Dill returns as the Bullpups’ No. 1. Dill placed fifth at district and was a second-team all-leaguer in 1999.
Sophomore Katie Brophy was one spot away from a second-team, all-league position last year. The cutoff was the league’s top 12 for average score.
The Bullpups’ other top returners are sophomore Shelbi Cavalar, junior Erica Heitman and junior Stephanie Morbeck.
Prep had the league’s third-best average last season.
Deer Park
Sophomore Tonya L’Homme advanced to state last season and golfed extensively over the summer.
The other returner for the four-person team is senior Challe Harris.
“The new girl that has shown outstanding potential is sophomore Michelle Cameron,” said third-year Stags coach Darren Snyder.
Lakeside
Junior Jaime Tikker has returned as the Eagles’ No. 1 player.
The program resumed last year after a two-year absence. A quintet of sophomores from 1999 didn’t turn out this spring because their motivator, Krista Martindale, moved to Utah.
Playing behind Tikker are returners Kelli Parker and Krystal Castles, both sophomores, and freshman Erica Heasley.
“They’re ahead of the game from last year, certainly,” said head coach Dean Field.
Field has a new assistant, Jolisa Wenkheimer, who will concentrate on the girls team.
