WASHINGTON

Adams County Othello

Pianist Stephen Beus recently won the Music Teachers National Association Yamaha High School Piano Competition in Minneapolis. Beus, 18, beat out six of the nation’s best pianists in a 30-minute program that included works by Rachmaninoff, Bach, Liszt, Mozart and Barber. Beus won $1,500 and the right to perform a concert at the end of the competition.

Ferry County Republic

Residents are eagerly awaiting the Fletcher Girls’ new CD. The girls - Connie, Brenda, Jeannie, Kelli and Holly - recently recorded their brand of vocal harmony at a Montana studio. They grew up in Ferry County and were frequent entertainers in the area during the 1970s and 1980s. For information on how to reserve a CD, contact The News-Miner newspaper in Republic.

Grant County George

Major improvements to The Gorge Amphitheatre this summer include widening several sections of access road and construction of a new water distribution system, including hot water. In addition, new owners House of Blues Concerts Inc. plan to erect 18 comfort stations with sinks and toilets.

Lincoln County Odessa

The Odessa Healthcare Foundation last week presented a $39,03 check to Odessa Memorial Hospital. The foundation raised the money through wine-tasting and auction events. In addition, the Joy Guild of the Heritage Women’s Fellowship donated $1,500 to the hospital.

Pend Orielle County Newport

Pend Oreille County sheriff’s deputies raided another meth lab last week, this time without waiting for the State Patrol’s Statewide Incident Response Team. Deputies confiscated three jars of suspected methamphetamine in its final stages, along with equipment and supplies.

Spokane County Spokane

Spokane Falls Community College’s student newspaper, The Communicator, received third-place honors as National College Newspaper of the Year among two-year college publications at the recent 2000 National College Newspaper Convention in Seattle. It is the first time the SFCC newspaper has received the national award.

Stevens County Colville

The final Colville Valley Community Concert of the season features trumpet virtuoso Joe Burgstaller. He will be backed by 60 local band students. Burgstaller is a faculty member at the State University of New York at Purchase. The concert is April 18 at the CHS auditorium.

Whitman County Pullman

Spring cleanup of downtown Pullman will be Friday at 7 a.m. in preparation for Mom’s Weekend. Cleaning crews are urged to meet at the Cougar Plaza.

Benewah County St. Maries

U.S. Rep. Helen Chenoweth-Hage and Gov. Dirk Kempthorne are guest speakers at the annual Lincoln Day Dinner and fund-raiser April 25 at the Eagles Lodge. A social hour including a photo with elected officials begins at 5 p.m.; dinner is at 6 p.m. First District congressional candidates, District 4 and 7 candidates for state Legislature and Benewah County sheriff candidates will also speak. Bonner County Sagle

Northern Lights Inc. moved into its new headquarters in Sagle. All services are now in the same building; payment drop-off points are at the new building and at Northland Cable TV. A grand opening will be May 12.

Boundary County Bonners Ferry

The girl’s high school golf team placed first and the Badger boys finished second against Lakeland, Libby, Mont., and Clark Fork high schools at the recent Bonners Ferry Golf Invitational Tournament at Mirror Lake Golf Course.

Kootenai County Worley

Learn how to detect and report suspected drug activity at a seminar at 7 p.m. tonight at the Coeur de’Alene Tribal Bingo/Casino. Presenters include Idaho State Police officers, drug experts, social workers and members of local law enforcement.

Latah County Moscow

A panel discussion on the U.S. Forest Service Roadless Initiative is 7:30 p.m. tonight at the University of Idaho Law School. Panel members are wilderness author Howie Wolke, timber company president Bill Mulligan, U.S. Forest Service representative Tom Rhode and a local conservationist, Gary MacFarlane. Moderator is Paul Hirt, an author and associate professor.

Amada and Jessica Shotzberger were named Millennium Dreamers by McDonald’s and Disney for their outstanding contributions to the community. Rocky and Kennie Ann Schauer nominated the girls separately. The girls and their parents will attend a special recognition event May 8-10 at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.
