Carpenter Saves One For T-Wolves

Catcher Megan Carpenter used a hammer and a nail Thursday to help Lake City to a 5-4 win at Colville in Border League softball.

Carpenter hammered a two-run home run in the third inning to lead the Timberwolves (9-0, 5-0) to a 4-0 lead. In the seventh, with Lake City protecting a 5-4 lead, Carpenter nailed a baserunner at first base for the rally-ending second out.

Winning pitcher Bobbi Darretta struck out five, doubled and tripled.

Lindsey Terry’s two-run triple in the fourth gave Colville (5-3, 3-3) a 4-all tie. The Indians allowed the winning run on an error in the sixth.

The other Border League games, Coeur d’Alene at West Valley and Lewiston at Cheney, were rained out. No makeup dates were announced.

Tammy Addington and Essie Nelson both went 2 for 2, combining for four RBIs and three runs, as St. Maries (11-2) defeated visiting Potlatch 11-3 in a rain-shortened, non-league game. Nikki Gibson (5-2) pitched a six-hitter, striking out four and walking three… . Other non-leaguers, Lakeland at Post Falls and Orofino at Moscow, were postponed by rain. No makeup dates were announced.

Baseball

Joe Spears and Tyler Albertson had two RBIs apiece to help Colville (7-3, 4-2) to a 10-8 win over visiting Lake City in the Border League. Colville’s Ross Challinor doubled in a run and later scored in the fourth for a 9-5 lead. Kevin Bauerle had two hits for the Timberwolves (3-8, 2-5)… . The day’s other league games, Coeur d’Alene at West Valley, Post Falls at Moscow, and Lewiston at Cheney, were postponed by rain. No makeup dates were announced.

A two-run throwing error by pitcher Chris Wojahn capped a five-run fifth and allowed St. Maries (12-1) to defeat visiting Liberty 6-5 in a rain-shortened, non-league game. Michael Schwartz added a two-run single in the fifth for the Lumberjacks. Bryan Frampton homered for the Lancers (5-6)… . Wallace’s non-league doubleheader at Kellogg was postponed by rain. No makeup date was announced.

Track and field

Kellogg’s boys and girls swept St. Maries and host Timberlake during an Intermountain League meet at Spirit Lake. Heather Hoeck led Kellogg’s girls by winning the 100- and 200-meter runs and the long jump. Tony Joy won both hurdles for the Kellogg boys… . In a league meet at Rathdrum, Bonners Ferry’s boys edged host Lakeland 67-65, while Lakeland’s girls rolled to an easy win. BF boys triple winners were Forest Braden in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200, and Andy Rice in the 400, high jump and triple jump.
