Old Art Gains New Respect

French President Jacques Chirac on Thursday inaugurated a new wing of the Louvre housing the museum’s first collection of primitive art objects from the world’s oldest civilizations. Putting some 120 statues, masks and other items from Africa, Asia, Oceania and North and South America in the Louvre took years, and marks a major step up for an art form long disdained by the French art establishment. “These galleries have been conceived in such a way as to allow visitors, literally overexposed to masterpieces from other departments, with totally different styles and materials, to discover art works comparable to the Louvre’s greatest treasures,” Chirac said.
