Adams County

Ritzville

RHS sophomore Brett Pflugrath has broken the school high-jump record. It was set in 1975 by Greg Arlt at 6-feet, 5-inches. Pflugrath began the season jumping 6-3 and within a few weeks, was leaping 6-5-1/2. He’s close to nailing 6-7, which would give him a good shot at the state title.

Ferry County

Republic

After five years, Mike Lust is stepping down as girls basketball coach for the Republic Tigers.

Through the years he’s taken the Tigers to district twice and his won-loss record is 65-36. He retires in the wake of being named the Panorama League’s Coach of the Year.

Grant County

Ephrata

The City Council is hoping rumors against City Manager Jim Cherf have been quashed. The city has been involved in investigations on supposed misuse of public property by Cherf for over five years. The state auditor’s office, county sheriff and prosecutor found no wrongdoing. The council continues to support him and asks people to do the same.

Lincoln County

Reardan

Trish Schwartz and Erica Guhlke were instrumental in founding an agricultural women’s group at WSU: the Ceres Women’s Fraternity. Schwartz, a senior ag major, has been president of the crop and soil sciences club, as well as greenhouse manager. Guhlke, who recently transferred to WSU from SFCC, will be social chair for the group.

Pend Oreille County

Newport

There will be a series of prescribed burns by the Colville National Forest’s Newport and Sullivan Lake Ranger District. This spring, nine different forest areas will be burned to keep dry brush down and lessen the fire danger during the summer. They also help in reforestation by eliminating dead plants and making prime planting spots. For a list of burn areas, call (509) 447-7300.

Delia “Dee” Kennedy’s recipe for microwave frittata was among 742 recipes chosen for Taste of Home’s new cookbook: “2000 Quick Cooking Annual Recipes,” a compilation of recipes featured throughout 1999 in Quick Cooking magazine.

Stevens County

Colville

Carter Toyota in Colville will soon have an electric hybrid concept car: the Toyota Prius, the world’s first mass-produced hybrid vehicle. The gas engine supplies the main power while the electric motor provides additional power when needed. Carter Toyota has taken several calls on the vehicle, which it plans to use in its rental program for 60 days to keep it from selling before all who wish to test drive it have a chance.

Whitman County

St. John

The St. John Fair and Stockshow is slated for April 21-22 and 30. Entries for several areas of judging may be submitted as early as Tuesday. The cowboy breakfast will be at 6:30 a.m. April 22, and the Dick Front Comedy Magic Show will be at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. The animal load-out begins at 3 p.m. On April 30, the horse show is at 9 a.m. followed by the pig putt at the St. John Golf & Country Club.

Several local loggers were recognized for their attention to quality and stewardship during Pacific Crown’s Logger Appreciation program. Loggers honored were Larry Donahoe of Larry Donahoe Logging, Ron Cox and Dan Schiermiester of Coschier Timber, John Law of Riverside Logging, David Hill of DLH Logging, Dave Michael of Frank Michael Logging and Troy Joiner of Troy Joiner Logging.

Priest Lake

The Sheriff’s Marine Patrol will return to routine patrols this summer after targeting boaters under the influence last year. Officers will stop boaters only if there’s a violation occurring - unless they see an increase in drunken and reckless activity re-emerging, Sgt. Larry Schulze said. Marine Patrol will offer several free boating inspections at different ramps on Pend Oreille and Priest lakes so boaters can avoid being stopped due to the lack of a safety inspection sticker.

Officer Ken Pitcher of the Idaho State Veterans Service will be at the mobile clinic site at the VFW Post Home from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday to assist veterans and their families in filing claims and to provide information.

The first Harrison Community Yard Sale is set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 20, on the main street through town. Anyone interested in joining should register ($3) by May 13 with the Chamber of Commerce. Moscow Junior High student Joshua O’Rourke placed second in the state geography bee recently held in Coeur d’Alene by National Geographic. O’Rourke competed against 100 fourth through eighth grade students.

Shoshone County

Kellogg

Unemployment in Shoshone County increased slightly in March. The state Department of Labor reported a 10.1 percent March jobless rate, up from 9.9 percent in February. The March 1999 rate was 12.6 percent. Shoshone County continues to lead the state in unemployment. The March jobless rate statewide was 4.1 percent, mirroring the national average.

Libby

High school senior Don Baney has signed a letter of intent to play football for Western Montana College, head coach Duane Rilla said. In 1999, Baney earned first team all-conference, first team all-state, Western A defensive MVP and second team all-conference guard honors. He also played in the East/West Shrine Game.
