Bennett Silences Usd; WSU Routed

Steve Bennett pitched a complete-game seven-hitter, striking out eight, as Gonzaga defeated San Diego 11-1 in a West Coast Conference baseball game at USD’s Cunningham Stadium.

Bennett (6-3) rolled along with a shutout until Josh Harris’ run-scoring groundout in the eighth inning.

Jeremy Doane’s two-run single to center field highlighted the Zags’ three-run first. Adam Stokey had a two-run double in the fifth for GU (19-15, 10-5), and Jon Gebbers added a two-run single to right in the seventh.

Jeff Phelps hit his second grand slam of the season to stake fourth-ranked Arizona State to a 6-0 lead before an out was recorded, and the Sun Devils pounded Washington State 24-3 in a Pacific-10 Conference game at Pullman.

Phil Downing homered twice for ASU (31-9, 7-3), the nation’s top-scoring team. The Sun Devils finished with five homers, four doubles and 13 singles.

WSU starter Todd Meldahl (1-5) allowed eight earned runs in two-thirds of an inning. Ray Hattenburg of the Cougars (14-23, 2-8) went 2 for 4 to extend his hitting streak to nine games.

The Cougars have lost six consecutive games.

Justin Wayne improved to 9-1 this season and 25-2 in his college career, striking out 10 as Stanford (27-9, 7-3) edged visiting Washington 6-5 in the Pac-10.

John Gall singled home the gamewinning run in the eighth. Todd Linden and Ed Erickson had RBI singles in the sixth to give the Huskies (14-18, 3-7) a 5-3 lead.

North Idaho’s home game against College of Southern Idaho was rained out. The teams will attempt to play three games today, starting at noon.

Softball

North Idaho’s game against 13th-ranked Utah Valley was rained out. The teams, 1-2 in Region 18 standings, will attempt to play at noon today.

Basketball

Gonzaga University senior basketball guard Richie Frahm underwent successful surgery Thursday to repair the fifth metatarsal of his left foot.

Frahm fractured the foot last weekend landing on another player’s foot while participating in the Portsmouth Invitational in Virginia, a showcase event attended by several NBA scouts.

“Everything went well,” Gonzaga trainer Steve Delong said of the surgery performed by Dr. Russell VanderWilde.
