Let’S Run To The Right
Left tackles and left linebackers, beware. A voice of the (political) right is looking for an NFL broadcasting job.
Rush Limbaugh has been campaigning on the air for the vacancy in the “Monday Night Football” broadcast booth created when Boomer Esiason was fired. ABC, determined to spice up a program with declining ratings, won’t rule out the conservative talk-show host.
“He’s certainly entitled to say what he wants on the air. We’re considering a lot of people,” ABC Sports vice president Mark Mandel said last week. “Anything is possible.”
Limbaugh fancies himself a serious football fan. He slid into the radio booth as a guest announcer for a few plays during a 1995 Denver Broncos game.
“This is not a PR stunt. It is real. This is something he is interested in,” said Kit Carson, Limbaugh’s chief of staff.
There must be life after Bob
Writes Mark Kriegel in the New York Daily News:
“If former POW John McCain can overcome his torture at the hands of the Viet Cong to become a United States senator and a voice on the national political scene, then there has to be hope for some of Bobby Knight’s ex-players, too.”
A fine distinction
Comedy writer Alex Kaseberg to the San Francisco Chronicle on Pac Bell Park, new home of the Giants:
“This is the only stadium in the country where home runs land in the water if you don’t count Phoenix’s swimming pool, Kansas City’s waterfall, Detroit’s synchronized water fountains or New York’s open sewer.”
The last word …
“Who do you think I am? I am just a man. I give up runs.”
- Pedro Martinez of the Boston Red Sox, waving off questions about the end of his scoreless innings streak.
