Surging Shadle Park Slows Oncoming Cv

Shadle Park and Central Valley are about as identical as two baseball teams can be.

Both have records of 7-3 in the Greater Spokane League and 10-3 overall.

Both won four of five games during the week, and have turned around GSL seasons that began 1-2.

And both had five hits during Friday afternoon’s game under sunny skies at CV.

But errors separated them Friday. CV’s 4-2 “advantage” in that category spelled the difference in Shadle’s 3-1 comeback win.

Ben Sorcinelli (3-2) struck out eight and had the game-winning hit in the sixth inning.

Sorcinelli flared a no-out, tworun single to right field for a 2-1 lead. The bases were loaded after CV committed three infield errors.

“That was my first game-winning hit,” said Sorcinelli, a senior righthander. “It was a changeup that jammed me a little. Luckily, I got it over second base.”

Ken Trujillo followed Sorcinelli with a rocketed single to left for the final run. Trujillo’s RBI knocked out left-hander Seth Gemar, who appeared headed toward a shutout before the rash of errors.

“I think both teams were running on the edge today, but both pitchers threw very well,” said Shadle coach Ron Brooks. “Ben’s throwing better all the time.”

Also in the GSL, Nick Scott pitched his fourth complete game and went 2 for 4, with two runs and two RBIs, as Rogers (4-6) defeated visiting North Central 9-5 to knock the Indians (7-2) out of first place. Thomas Gest added three RBIs and two runs for Rogers during his 3-for-4 day. … Adam Oakley struck out eight and went 3 for 4, with two doubles and three RBIs, and Ferris (8-2) defeated Lewis and Clark 7-3 at Hart Field to jump into first place. The Saxons’ Eric Everson went 3 for 4 with three runs. … Kevin Joslyn pitched a two-hitter and Joe Kernkamp hit a tworun homer in a 7-2 Mt. Spokane (3-7) win over visiting University (3-7). … Kurt Hibbard had four RBIs, including a two-run double in the seventh, and Mead (5-5) rallied for a 16-14 win at Gonzaga Prep (1-9). Mead’s Dan Thigpen had a three-run homer and a bases-loaded walk. G-Prep left the bases loaded four times, including in the seventh.

Dwight Kasinger’s one-out sacrifice fly in the seventh gave Riverside a 12-11 win over Deer Park and a split of a Great Northern League doubleheader. Shawn Henry went 4 for 4, including a two-run double in the seventh, to give DP (4-10) an 11-9 win in the opener. DP’s Steve Barclay had six hits on the day. Daniel Loosier of the Rams (3-13) went 6 for 9 with six RBIs on the day.

Softball

Maria Ruddell went 4 for 4 with two RBIs and Carrie Dorendorf pitched a four-hitter, striking out seven, as Ferris (6-5) upset Lewis and Clark 8-1 in a Greater Spokane League game at Hart Field. Lindsay Tomlin of the Saxons went 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Danielle Murphy had two hits for LC (9-3).

Also in the GSL, Jessica Murray pitched a two-hitter and had an RBI in the sixth as visiting Shadle Park (9-2) moved past LC into second place with a 2-0 win at Central Valley (7-4). Katie Hoffman went 2 for 3 for Shadle. … Shronna Martin’s RBI single capped a four-run seventh, all runs coming with two out, and Rogers (6-5) rallied past visiting North Central 4-3. Mindy Morgan added a two-run single in the seventh to back Jamie Merrill’s 10-strikeout day. Merrill checked NC (0-11) on two singles… . Megan Owen struck out 12 and pitched a two-hitter to lead first-place University (10-1) to a 6-0 win at Mt. Spokane (6-5). Vanessa Shelton and Lindsey Steblaj had two-run singles for the Titans… . April Skubinna struck out seven and Christi Thorne had two RBIs to lead Gonzaga Prep (4-8) to a 7-2 win over visiting Mead (2-9).

Blake Hoorelbeke pitched a onehitter and hit a three-run homer, guiding Coeur d’Alene (13-3, 9-3) to a 9-0 win over visiting Post Falls (4-5, 2-5) in the Border League.

Golf

Champions Corey Prugh and Lani Elston led Ferris’ boys and girls to team titles during the second of four GSL tournaments, at Wandermere Golf Course.

Prugh shot a 2-under-par 68 to edge teammate and brother Alex and Mt. Spokane’s Matt Kodama by two strokes. Ferris edged Mead 362-369. Elston fired a 2-under 69 for a seven-shot gap on Lewis and Clark’s Sarah Bassett. Ferris shot 394 for a 54-shot margin over runner-up LC.
